Boxing Result: Campbell Defeats Funeka In Lightweight Swan Song

By Richard Eberline February 15th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Last night at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, FL, lightweight Nate Campbell held off a good challenge by South Africa's Ali Funeka to win a majority decision over twelve rounds to lead the way on a massive Don King promoted fight card.

Campbell's IBF, WBA and WBO titles were not on the line as he had been stripped of the belts the day before when he could not make the lightweight limit of 135 pounds.

Still showing surprising stamina at 36 years of age, Campbell put on a good effort but it was the knockdowns of Funeka in the second and eleventh rounds that would win him the contest after 12 competitive rounds.

The native Floridian won two of the cards by scores of 115-111 and 114-112 while Funeka managed to pull even on the third at 113-113.

Campbell moves to 33-5-1 (25) in his final bout at lightweight as he will now campaign at 140 pounds while Funeka sees a 16 bout win streak snapped and falls to 30-2-2 (25). More...

By Robert Brizel October 17th, 2008 All Boxing Articles

Miguel Angel Cotto
32-0 welterweight champ Cotto backed away from Margarito when the punishment became severe.

Amir Khan
Popular but overhyped Khan’s 18-0 lightweight record fell to Breidis Prescott in only 54 seconds. Britain had to relive Jerry Quarry vs. Jack Bodell all over again.

Marcos Ramirez
Ramirez blew a 25-0 record against Yuriorkis Gamboa and was knocked down twice in the second round and appeared to have been ‘quick counted’ out at nine by the Germans.

Andrey Tsurkan
Tsurkan could not get out of the twelfth round in his light middleweight ‘step up’ bout against unbeaten Alfredo Angulo and took a good pasting along the way.

First Arslan

Former world champions Ricardo Mayorga and Shane Mosley may not be top caliber light middleweights anymore but they refuse to go away quietly as they rocked the Staples Center in Los Angeles last night with a thrilling back and forth epic that saw both men have their moments before Mosley's punches finally took their toll.

Mayorga's bull-like rushes had Mosley on the back foot early on as the former three weight world champ absorbed the body attack and roughhousing while he studied his antagonist.

The education began to pay off as Mosley started to time Mayorga and catch the Nicaraguan hard man with bracing blows on the way in. More...

In what should prove to be an interesting boxer vs. slugger matchup tonight from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, former multi-weight world champions Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga meet in a 12 round contest between aging warriors.

Mosley, 44-5 (37), is the more decorated of the two, having won titles at lightweight, welterweight and light middle and is coming off good performances over the last two years in a losing but hard fought effort against Miguel Cotto, a superb outboxing of Luis Collazo and two stoppage victories over Fernando Vargas.

Mayorga, 29-6-1 (23), is coming off a majority decision win over Vargas last year but the ex-WBC/WBA Welter titlist also was crushed by Oscar De La Hoya in 2006, losing the WBC Light Middle belt in the process. More...
