Despite sitting on the sidelines the last 21 months, Floyd Mayweather Jr returned in top form tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to reestablish his authority as the finest boxer of his generation and in the world today.

Following up his 10 round dismantling of Ricky Hatton in December, 2007, Mayweather came back to his former stomping grounds of Vegas to shove aside the aspirations of Juan Manuel Marquez over the twelve rounder at welterweight.

Much had been made of Marquez's two highly contentious contests against arch-rival Manny Pacquiao during the media buildup leading up to tonight's clash but the masterful Mayweather aptly showed that meant nothing when stacked up against his prodigious gifts. More...

Al Bernstein On Boxing: Perception vs. Reality

By Al Bernstein May 26th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

SaddoBoxing has the honor of introducing Al Bernstein and his new exclusive column, "Al Bernstein On Boxing"!

Al is unquestionably the top television analyst in the sport today, appearing on Showtime since 2003 along with stints at ESPN and NBC and currently hosts the Internet's premier boxing channel on iBN Sports.

A winner of the Sam Taub Award for excellence in boxing broadcast journalism, Al is also a recording artist and has appeared on the stages of major casinos and resorts across the U.S.

In addition, Al authored the book "Boxing For Beginners", has written for The Ring and Boxing Illustrated and held the position of Managing Editor for Lerner Newspapers in Chicago.

We now live in a world where perception is much more powerful than reality. We see it in the political arena where spin doctoring by those in office and bias driven reporting by the media often colors public opinion more than actual facts…if we can still ascertain actual facts in that arena.

In America, many years ago there was a television police drama called Dragnet. In just about every episode the chief investigator Sgt. Joe Friday would interrupt a meandering witness by saying to them, “Just the facts.” Anyone who is truly involved with the sport of boxing, as a fan, a person who covers it, or someone working in the industry, would probably like to scream that Sgt. Friday phrase at the top of their lungs, to try and make some people actually care about the facts. More...

Boxing Result: Juan Diaz Defeats Michael Katsidis By Split Decision In Houston

By Richard Eberline September 7th, 2008 All Boxing Results

In a hotly anticipated showdown between hard-nosed come-forward sluggers, lightweights Juan Diaz and Michael Katsidis went to war last night at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX, and after the dust settled Diaz had pulled out a split decision victory to capture the vacant IBO title.

For the first half of the bout, Diaz engaged in target practice, nailing his tough Aussie opponent with a two handed avalanche that had Katsidis swollen and cut around both eyes.

But the huge-hearted Katsidis refused to give up and as Diaz began to tire from his sheer effort, Michael "The Great" went to work and outlanded the local man over most of the second half of the bout.

Diaz absorbed what Katsidis had to dish out and returned fire just enough to carry two of the three scorecards 116-112 and 115-113 while Katsidis took the third 115-113.

Winning by split decision, former unified world champion Diaz improves to 34-1 (17) while ex-WBO Interim titlist Katsidis drops his second in a row to fall to 23-2 (20).

On the undercard, former WBO Super Feather Champ Jorge Barrios and three-time world title challenger Rocky Juarez also engaged in a thrilling two-way contest.

Juarez was characteristically patient with his efforts, focusing on the body and tight combinations while Barrios proved to be the more active man, outboxing the Texan until caught by a hard right from Juarez in the eleventh frame. More...
