Sometimes lightning does strike twice as WBO light flyweight champ Ivan Calderon had his rematch with Rodel Mayol at Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico end early for the same reason as their first pairing in June: a head clash.
One again Calderon was cut badly after a difficult test against the Filipino hard man but this time instead of the technical draw in June, the Guaynabo southpaw came away with a technical decision, winning two scorecards 68-65 while Mayol was awarded the third by the same margin.
Could a third clash between these two be on offer? Calderon has now seen his last three contests end early for the same reason.
Calderon retains the WBO belt for the fifth time and keeps an undefeated career mark of 33-0-1 (6), while Mayol drops to 25-4-1 (19). More...

MIguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey went to war last night over 12 hard rounds at New York's fabled Madison Square Garden with Cotto emerging still in possession of his WBO Welterweight title by a narrow split decision.
Clottey showed a massive heart by taking everything the Puerto Rican star could dish out while coming back time and time again with rattling combinations of his own.
The bout proved difficult to score as the pair went at it in close quarters and a Cotto knockdown of Clottey in the very first frame proved to be the deciding factor in the clash.
Cotto, who was cut in the third from a clash of heads, had much of his successes early and enjoyed a good round in the sixth when he went all out to stop Clottey but the challenger survived the shelling. More...

Lots of action last night at the Cebu Coliseum in Cebu City, Philippines where Bert Batawang, Rodel Mayol and Federico Catubay all rolled on to victory.
36 year old southpaw light flyweight Batawang, 52-7 (36), enjoyed his second win in a row following a failed bid to unseat IBF Champion Ulises Solis by stopping well-traveled Thai Samransak Singmanassak, 32-19-1 (36), in the fourth.
Singmanassak had a 12 year youth advantage on his side going into the bout and was giving Batawang a good fight before walking into the perfect right hand that knocked him out at 0:37 of the fourth round. With the win, Batawang secures the vacant WBO Oriental Light Fly title.
Mandaue City resident Rodel Mayol, 24-3 (19), returned to the win column with a fifth round stoppage of another Thai fighter, Wisan Sor Suchanya, 9-7-1 (2), at light flyweight. More...
