Boxing In Mexico: Mayol Shocks Sosa For WBC Belt, Segura Retains WBA Crown

By Alejandro Tostado November 22nd, 2009 All Boxing Results

Edgar Sosa's 25 bout win streak was snapped last night by Filipino Rodel Mayol, who stopped the Mexico City man in two to annex the WBC light flyweight title at Palenque de la Feria in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico.

Sosa won the WBC strap in April, 2007 against Brian Viloria and had successfully retained the title 10 times. By contrast, Mayol had been unable to win a world title in four previous attempts including two against WBO light flyweight kingpin Ivan Calderon earlier this year when Calderon was cut and could not continue.

Once the bell rang, Sosa and Mayol went at it but things went ary in the second when the champion was forced to take a knee after a clash of heads. More...

Boxing Result: Calderon, Martinez Retain Titles In Puerto Rico

By Alejandro Tostado September 13th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Sometimes lightning does strike twice as WBO light flyweight champ Ivan Calderon had his rematch with Rodel Mayol at Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico end early for the same reason as their first pairing in June: a head clash.

One again Calderon was cut badly after a difficult test against the Filipino hard man but this time instead of the technical draw in June, the Guaynabo southpaw came away with a technical decision, winning two scorecards 68-65 while Mayol was awarded the third by the same margin.

Could a third clash between these two be on offer? Calderon has now seen his last three contests end early for the same reason.

Calderon retains the WBO belt for the fifth time and keeps an undefeated career mark of 33-0-1 (6), while Mayol drops to 25-4-1 (19). More...

By Danny Wilson September 12th, 2009 All Boxing Previews

The hottest ticket in San Juan tonight will be a seat at Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot as WBO light fly ruler Ivan Calderon and WBO super feather supremo Roman Martinez put their crowns at risk.

Calderon, 32-0-1 (6), hasn't had a non-title bout in over five years after defending the WBO minimumweight trophy 11 times and his current WBO light fly belt on four occasions.

The 34 year old southpaw rematches big punching Filipino Rodel Mayo, 25-3-1 (19), a former OPBF minimumweight titlist who engaged in a six round TD with Calderon in Madison Square Garden in June when the Puerto Rican hero was cut too badly to continue. More...

Boxing Result: Cotto Squeeks Past Clottey Via Split Decision

By Richard Eberline June 14th, 2009 All Boxing Results

MIguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey went to war last night over 12 hard rounds at New York's fabled Madison Square Garden with Cotto emerging still in possession of his WBO Welterweight title by a narrow split decision.

Clottey showed a massive heart by taking everything the Puerto Rican star could dish out while coming back time and time again with rattling combinations of his own.

The bout proved difficult to score as the pair went at it in close quarters and a Cotto knockdown of Clottey in the very first frame proved to be the deciding factor in the clash.

Cotto, who was cut in the third from a clash of heads, had much of his successes early and enjoyed a good round in the sixth when he went all out to stop Clottey but the challenger survived the shelling. More...

Boxing In The Philippines: Cebu City Results

By Danny Wilson May 4th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Lots of action last night at the Cebu Coliseum in Cebu City, Philippines where Bert Batawang, Rodel Mayol and Federico Catubay all rolled on to victory.

36 year old southpaw light flyweight Batawang, 52-7 (36), enjoyed his second win in a row following a failed bid to unseat IBF Champion Ulises Solis by stopping well-traveled Thai Samransak Singmanassak, 32-19-1 (36), in the fourth.

Singmanassak had a 12 year youth advantage on his side going into the bout and was giving Batawang a good fight before walking into the perfect right hand that knocked him out at 0:37 of the fourth round. With the win, Batawang secures the vacant WBO Oriental Light Fly title.

Mandaue City resident Rodel Mayol, 24-3 (19), returned to the win column with a fifth round stoppage of another Thai fighter, Wisan Sor Suchanya, 9-7-1 (2), at light flyweight. More...
