Ryan Clark of Lincolnshire retained his International Masters Super-Middleweight Title by sixth round knockout on Friday night, but it was tinged with horror as opponent Jonjo Finnegan lay for a long time on the canvas while doctors and ringside paramedics tended to the home-boxer. It’s the longest I personally have ever seen someone on the canvas and it was sad to see the likeable Burton man stretchered out of the ring. The waiting crowds clapped and cheered at times – in the hope that Finnegan would be roused by their support.

Today, Sunday, Jonjo is in hospital after brain surgery for a ‘bleed on the brain’. All at Saddoboxing.com hope that he makes a full recovery.

The Errol Johnson promoted fight-night at the Town Hall in Burton-on-Trent featured four contests with Clark v Finnegan as the headliner.

It was a cracking fight up to the knockdown. Both men got off to a good start and it looked as if it would turn out to be a closely fought contest. Finnegan gained confidence in the third round as he started to land uppercuts, while Clark persisted with perfectly placed body-shots. Finnegan’s nose was bloody in the fifth and both men were landing with decent shots, but a right to the head from Clark catapulted Finnegan to the canvas – falling heavily – and Referee Rob Chalmers immediately stopped the fight – dashing over to the aid of Finnegan.

There were no victory celebrations for Clark who retains the Title and improves to 4 wins (2 by KO) 53 losses (2 by KO) and 4 draws.

Jason Nesbitt (Birmingham) v Faheem Khan (Exeter)
4 x 2 Welterweight Contest

Khan – who had travelled up from Exeter – had a tough close contest against Nesbitt. The Exeter man started off confidently launching a barrage of shots while Nesbitt covers up for the first twenty seconds of the opener, but Nesbitt throws just one shot and Khan ‘feels it’.

Nesbitt looked (imo) the better of the two men – landing less shots but more notable ones. Khan gets the points win 39-38 and improves to 2 wins and 1 draw.

Nesbitt drops to 9 wins (6 by KO) 151 losses (12 by KO) 3 draws.

Luke Gallear (Derby) v Matt Seawright (Tamworth)
6 x 2 Light Middleweight Contest

Luke ‘Geezy’ Gallear faced a determined Matt Seawright and didn’t seem to find his rhythm against the man. A very focussed Seawright kept the Derby man at bay with long-reaching lefts while popular Geezy dipped low to avoid the shots.

The result was a draw 58-58

Gallear’s record now stands at 4 wins 3 losses (1 by KO) and 2 draws.

Seawright’s record now stands at 3 wins 60 losses (14 by KO) and 4 draws.

Tom Shaw (Burton-on-Trent) v Billy Smith (Stourport)
4 x 3 Light Welterweight Contest

Confident Tom Shaw dominated the fight to win on points 40-36
He improves to 6 wins no losses, while Smith drops to 13 wins 120 losses (8 by KO) and 2 draws.

  • Chris Billam-Smith vs Ryan Rozicki 03/06/2026
Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. CBS became world champion when more talented British boxers like Okole and Riakporhe did not. In fact he beat both and forced them to go up to heavyweight. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

  • Jai Opetaia saying what many of us think 26/05/2026
Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
