Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado December 7th, 2008 All Boxing Results

The biggest boxing card this weekend was actually on Thursday at the famed Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where three title fights took place.

The South American and WBO Latino Cruiserweight titles were fought over by Victor Emilio Ramirez, 13-1 (11), and Hector Ricardo Sotelo, 18-10-2 (6), with the 24 year old local man Ramirez, aka "El Tyson de Abasto", stopping crosstown rival and former Argentine Light Heavy Champ Sotelo in the second round.

There was a big unification showdown as well with local legend, WBA Female Super Bantam Marcela Eliana "El Tigresa" Acuna, 31-5 (16), winning her twelfth straight contest to rip the WBC belt away from Cordoba's Alejandra Marina Oliveras, 12-1-2 (4), in a hard fought ten round unanimous decision.

Yesica Yolanda Bopp, 7-0 (3), continued the Buenos Aires victory parade as she dropped Venezuelan visitor Ana Fernandez, 8-3 (5), in the third enroute to posting a wide points verdict after ten frames to secure the vacant WBA Female Light Flyweight title.

There was also action on Friday in Argentina with South American Light Middle Champ Javier Alberto Mamani, 35-7-1 (19), delighting his hometown fans with a ten round points win in a non-title bout against Cordoba man Valentin Antonio Ochoa, 19-10-1 (8), at General Guemes in Salta. More...

Boxing In South And Central America: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado July 20th, 2008 All Boxing Results

There weren't any big shows this weekend but there was a good bit of action strung out across Central and South America and going alphabetically, we begin in Argentina.

On Saturday at Club Atletico Adelante in Sante Fe, Alejandro Daniel Gomez, 9-16-3 (2), reversed last December's loss to crosstown local rival Oscar Jesus Pereyra, 14-1 (10), in a big upset to capture Pereyra's WBA Fedelatin Lightweight title.

31 year old Gomez was ceding eight years of age to the previously undefeated prospect but the iron chin and long experience of "El Pato" eventually won the day.

Another upset took place on the bill when Chubut super flyweight Sebastian Eladio Ferreyra, 5-7-2 (3), took South American Flyweight Champion Santiago Ivan Acosta, 15-1-2 (7), the distance and forced a draw in a six round non-title bout.

Friday night at Club Atletico Penarol in Buenos Aires saw local man Gustavo Javier Kapusi, 19-12-3 (7), return from an IBF Pan Pacific Super Middleweight title fight loss to Sakio Bika in April by posting a six round points victory over Julian Alcides Pino, 6-7-1 (2), at cruiserweight.

Next up, Brazil, where on Saturday night at Centro Universitario Italo-Brasileiro in Sao Paulo, former world title challenger Giovanni Andrade, 58-11 (48), won two small regional belts at super bantam by stopping Argentina's Jorge Antonio Paredes, 20-14-3 (5), in the seventh frame.

On Friday in Sao Paulo, heavyweight Raphael Zumbano, 15-3-1 (14), forced a retirement of 43 year old former Brazilian titlist Carlos Barcelete, 20-16-2 (10), after five rounds of action to retain the WBC Mundo Hispano title at Companhia Athletica Brooklyn. More...
