Boxing In South Africa: Three ABU Titles Change Hands In Johannesburg

By Wellington Amadulu July 27th, 2008 All Boxing Results

BSP put on a thrilling show on Friday night at Carousel Casino in Johannesburg, South Africa where there were three African Boxing Union titles at risk.

The battle between the most experienced men took place for the vacant ABU Super Feather crown as Jasper Seroka, 16-1 (7), defeated Gabriel Phakula, 21-7 (8), on points after 12 rounds in a rematch to their original contest two years ago.

The vacant ABU Super Flyweight crown was decided when prospect Lesley Sekotswe, 8-0 (6), hit the jackpot with a cuts stoppage of former South African Champ Simon Ramoni, 27-12-1 (17), in the seventh round.

Ramoni's career hit it's high point when "The Cheetah" defended his IBO Super Bantam crown for the third time with an eight round stoppage over former titlist Patrick Mullings in 2000, but Ramoni hasn't been the same since losing the South African Super Fly belt to Zolile Mbityi in 2002.

Swedish based Ugandan Hassan Saku, 9-6 (8), came into the first title defense of his career as the reigning ABU Welterweight Champ but prospect Chris "The Heat" Van Heerden, 10-0-1 (8), left the Carousel Casino with the ABU belt after he KO'd Saku in the eighth round.

Boxing In South Africa: Ali Funeka Crushes Zahir Raheem To Win IBF Eliminator

By Wellington Amadulu July 6th, 2008 All Boxing Results

One of America's top lightweights came to Jan Smuts Stadium in East London last night in search of a world title opportunity and in the eyes of many, Zahir Raheem was almost certain to return home to the US with that title challenge in his pocket.

After all, hadn't Raheem easily defeated one of the best Mexican fighters in a generation, Eric Morales, and narrowly lost a heavily disputed split decision to Acelino Freitas?

And all Raheem had to do was get past local man Ali Funeka, who had never fought outside of his home country or faced the kind of competition that Raheem had been in the ring with.

But Funeka hadn't been without success, having held the South African Super Feather crown over six defenses and the WBC International Lightweight strap for three bouts and was riding a 15 contest win streak stretching back six years.

The first round was largely a studying session for both men as they attempted to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the other in this packed stadium that usually hosts Cricket and Track and Field events. More...

Boxing In South Africa: East London Results

By Wellington Amadulu June 28th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Boxing mad East London in the Eastern Cape saw a big show last night at the city's famed Orient Theatre.

In a thrilling contest, IBO Minimumweight Champion Nkosinathi Joyi had to climb off the canvas before he could stave off and then finish the spirited challenge of Mexican titlist Sammy Gutierrez in the seventh round.

The Central American import went after Joyi from the start, putting on tremendous pressure in true Mexican style. The champion dealt with the adversity well, rocking the challenger with solid countershots but was down in the fifth from a perfectly placed body punch from Gutierrez.

Joyi beat the count and took advantage of the haste shown by Gutierrez, who resorted to winging big punches that the champion easily saw coming and avoided. More...

Boxing In South Africa: Mabuza Retains, Makepula Dethroned in IBO title Action From Kempton Park

By Wellington Amadulu June 1st, 2008 All Boxing Results

It was a four title fight night at the Emperor's Palace in Kempton Park last evening with two IBO and two South African crowns on the line.

It was hard to call the action between IBO Super Flyweight Champ Masibulele "Hawk" Makepula, 28-5 (18), of East London and his local rival, Zolile "Bonecrusher" Mbityi, 32-13-3 (11), who is the reigning South African Champ at 115 lb.

By the time the 12th round came to a close, 37 year old Mbityi was declared the winner and new IBO titlist by split decision scores of 116-113, 115-113 and 115-116.

A former IBO and South African Champ at flyweight, Mbityi has now won four in a row while Makepula was coming off a loss to Jorge Arce of Mexico in a WBC Super Flyweight title eliminator.

One of the best bantamweights in the world, Silence Mabuza, 22-2 (18), made an appearance at Emperor's Palace and "African Spice" pounded out a fifth round stoppage of Argentine visitor Damian David Marchiano, 15-4-1 (15), of Buenos Aires. More...
