British Boxing: Brook Defeats Ewell To Retain Welter Title

By Ricky Jones January 31st, 2009 All Boxing Results

Last night at the York Hall in London's Bethnal Green, British Welterweight Champion Kell Brook put on a dazzling display of skill over the course of stopping challenger Stuart Elwell in just two rounds.

Overmatched from the start, 31 year old southpaw Elwell caught a lot of leather from the champion over a short period of time and was pitched onto the canvas twice in the initial round.

The big hearted Walsall man beat the count on both occasions and managed to survive the round but it was just a matter of time before Brook blazed through Elwell's defenses in the second and the bout was called at 1:29 of the frame to put an end to the one way traffic.

22 year old phenom Brook goes to 19-0 (12), making his second defense of the British crown. The budding Sheffield star stands atop the 10 stone 7 rankings in Britain and could be headed for a unification clash with Commonwealth kingpin Craig Watson.

Elwell loses for the third time over his last four outings to fall to 12-4 (1).

The Everton Park Sports Centre in Liverpool, England also played host to a cracking undercard on Friday night in a Matchroom Sports promoted fight night which was headlined by British Light Welterweight Champion David Barnes’s unanimous points win over Scottish boxer and former titlist Barry Morrison.

The second main fight of the evening was the eight round light welterweight contest between former European Champion 'Dangerous' Ted Bami of Brixton, London, and Stuart Elwell of Darlaston, West Midlands.

A former Commando in the Royal Marines, Elwell got off to a great start against Bami. Managing to ‘smother’ Bami’s work on the inside - the West Midlands man looks focussed in the first couple of rounds but Bami settles in around the third frame delivering a couple of good body-shots. Yesterday at 'Touchbase' in the Premier Inn on Albert Dock in Liverpool, England, Matchroom Sports held the weigh-in for tonight's fightnight at the Everton Park Sports Centre, Liverpool. Headlining the 'bill' is David Barnes' defence of the British Light Welterweight title against former titleist, the Scotsman Barry Morrison.

But it was a nerve-racking time for Barnesy as he arrived late for the weigh-in and then scaled 14 ounces over the limit! Stripping off his underwear - Barnes took to the scales again to see how much he needed to lose. The second weight revealed an 11 ounce loss was needed and he had just one hour to shed the weight.

Morrison, who had weighed in 2 ounces under the target, was forced to wait it out for an hour. More...

Boxing Gym Spotlight: Wednesbury Boxing Academy

Arriving at the doorway of the Wednesbury Boxing Academy, I was still wondering why I hadn’t visited the gym before. I used to live locally, so Wednesbury is a place I’ve been to many times.

The front of the single-storied building looked fairly small - but afterward, I mused it was a bit like a ‘tardis’ because the gym - though not huge - stretched back to reveal a ‘comfortable’ workspace with several punch bags and a decent ‘ring’.

Bob Plant greeted me at the door. Having met Bob and Errol Johnson on a number of occasions - it was the first time I’d ventured in to their ’space’ but - as I guessed - they immediately made me feel very welcome. Just back from a holiday - a tanned Bob was enjoying some ‘banter’ with the lads as they power-skipped.

A trickle of boxers came through the door, each one getting straight to work on their training routine - some on the punch bags, others power-skipping. Bob and Errol revealed that they had around 47 professional boxers on their ‘books’ though they didn’t all train every session. More...
