It was a full house last night at the packed Brentwood Centre in Essex, England for the Frank Maloney promoted Fightnight headlined by the eagerly awaited contest between John McDermott and Tyson Fury.

The night was billed as ‘Colossal’ with McDermott defending his English Heavyweight title against younger, less experienced Fury.

The atmosphere inside the Brentwood Centre was fantasti ! And dancing along to his entrance music - ‘Tonight’s gonna be a good night’ - Fury, as usual, was clearly enjoying the attention.

Unlike his opponent - a mean looking ‘Big Bad John’ McDermott - who ‘plodded’ down the stairway to the ring. More...

By Ricky Jones September 11th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

The tension between John McDermott and rival Tyson Fury was tremendous yesterday at the weigh-in between the two heavyweights, who clash tonight at Brentwood Centre in Essex.

At stake is McDermott's English heavyweight title but many are looking at this bout as a manner of judging the future viability of undefeated prospect Fury's career.

At the weigh-in, McDermott looked to be the fittest of his career and was clearly furious at his towering antagonist, who had waged a typical pre-fight campaign of trash talking. More...

Tuesday Night at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, England, Frank Maloney hosted a fight night headlined by Nottingham boxer Jason Booth's defence of the British Super Bantamweight title against Rocky Dean of Thetford.

Both men keep busy as they start this 12 round contest, but their heads come together frequently and by the end of the first round, Booth has already sustained a cut to the forehead.

Dean has a better second round and the crowds cheer ‘Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!’ Sky Sports Statistics reveal that during the second round alone - Booth threw 112 punches with an 18% success rate, as opposed to Dean's 66 punches that had a better success rate of 22%.

Round four sees Booth land a sickening body-punch to Dean's torso. But Dean starts the fifth trying the same tactic and lands some short body-punches. Mid-way through the frame, he backs Booth up on the ropes but Booth retaliates with a lovely right hand to the face followed moments later by another peach of a right and he starts to ‘pick off' Dean. Last nigh, at ‘The Troxy’ in the East End of London, England, Frank Maloney hosted a St.Georges Day Dinner Event which would show four action packed contests including an English title fight.

Billed as ‘The Slayers’ - this special fund-raising event was headlined by the English Super Flyweight title contest between Ross ‘The Boss’ Burkinshaw of Sheffield and Mike ‘Robbo’ Robinson of Liverpool.

The event also signalled the launch of Maloney's ‘St. Georges Sporting Club’ which promises to host men-only ‘do's’ around the country as well as mixed-sex events, such as a Summer Ball, to raise money for charity.

It was a big night for Mr. Maloney, not just because of the club launch, and the setting of The Troxy - but boxing celebrities, friends, colleagues and family gathered to celebrate his 25th anniversary as a promoter.

The Troxy - an ‘Art Deco’ styled venue in the heart of London's East End - was packed with guests. There were forty tables, plus the top-table, where guests enjoyed a typically ‘hearty’ English three course meal. More...

Friday night at the Newham Leisure Centre in the East End of London, England, Frank Maloney hosted a fight night headlined by Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa’s first defence of the European Bantamweight title against Algerian born Frenchman Malik Bouziane.

The taller Bouziane received good support from supporters who had travelled over to see him, but he looked serious as he waited in the ring for his opponent.

The champion entered the ring wearing trademark black shades, flanked by trainer Brian Lawrence and Napa’s two belts, the European and Lonsdale, held aloft.

Bouziane comes out and straight away throws the first punch. Keeping busy with the left jab - Bouziane looks sharp. Napa dips low to target the body of his French-Algerian opponent. More...

Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa had his toughest test yet last night when he challenged big-punching Belgian Carmelo Ballone for the European Bantamweight title at the famous York Hall, Bethnal Green, in the East End of London.

The likable Hackney lad entered the ring wearing his usual dark shades and with a female entourage holding his British title belt aloft. The ‘Belgian Butcher’ Ballone had plenty of support from his own fans who’d made the trip to London. Loud horns were blasting out around the York Hall as he stepped coolly into the ring.

Ballone, the taller of the two having a long-reaching southpaw stance, had the better start - with Napa adopting his usual tight, stiff, defence and being more cautious as he settles in. More...
