Yuriorkis Gamboa Dominates Ponce De Leon In Atlantic City

By Richard Eberline September 11th, 2011 All Boxing Results

Undefeated ex-WBA and IBF featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa defeated heavy-handed former WBO super bantam titlist Daniel Ponce De Leon last night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.

Delivering a toned-down cautious performance, likely out of respect to southpaw Ponce De Leon's punching power, former Cuban amateur star Gamboa nonetheless put on a display of precision boxing, hitting his opponent when he pleased while rarely getting caught with anything in return.

Gamboa nullified Ponce De Leon's offense on sheer reflexes alone; ducking, slipping or zipping in lightning fast counters whenever the Mexican came forward looking to do damage.

Gone from Gamboa's repertoire were the blizzard of devil-may-care combinations that he attacked opponents with in previous fights, replaced with a cool, measured approach that occasional erupted into lethal brilliance. More...

Boxing Result: Salido Upsets Lopez In WBO Title Shocker

By Alejandro Tostado April 17th, 2011 All Boxing Results

After a mercurial career, featherweight spoiler Omar Salido pulled off his biggest upset to date by unseating WBO ruler Juan Manuel Lopez in thrilling fashion at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

For his foray behind enemy lines, Salido quietly slipped into the bout, content to let the big-punching southpaw champion lead the way during the deceptively calm early frames.

But Salido had been studying Lopez's defense and by the fifth began to exploit the holes via a powerful right hand that had the champion down and badly hurt near the end of the frame. More...

Boxing Preview: Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Orlando Salido

By Nick Chamberlain April 16th, 2011 All Boxing Previews

On Saturday, Juan Manuel Lopez or ‘Juanma’ will face off against challenger Orlando Salido in defence of his WBO Featherweight title. Juanma’s record stands at 30-0 with 27 KO’s, whilst Salido’s is 34-11-2 with 22 KO’s.

Obviously, on paper, Juanma will blow Salido away, but in reality, it will be a shock if that happens.

Salido is a very tough fighter, eight of those eleven losses happened between the ages of 15-21. He was still plying his trade, learning his craft. It is the same for many Mexican fighters, thrown in at the deep end early in their career.

Salido got his first shot at a world title in 2004, against a younger Juan Manuel Marquez, who at the time was 42-2-1. The IBF and WBA Featherweight titles were on the line. Marquez is a surgical operator, and he can punch.

The majority of the fight Salido was completely out boxed, but then Marquez is a master boxer. He got caught on the counter rushing in, but if there is something to be said for that performance its that Salido never looked like he was going to be stopped or in serious danger, and he continued to pressure Marquez until the final bell. By all accounts Salido lost a unanimous decision, but the heart was there. More...

Boxing Result: IBF Champ Gamboa Crushes Solis In Atlantic City

By Richard Eberline March 27th, 2011 All Boxing Results

IBF featherweight king Yuriorkis Gamboa may have lost his WBA title on the scales before his fight last night at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall but the former Olympic Gold Medallist from Cuba handed Mexican challenger Jorge Solis a complete and thorough defeat.

The first round featured only mild action as the pair of combatants studied each other but that period of calm was shattered by the second as Gamboa began to hammer the veteran Solis.

Solis hit the deck twice in the face of a blizzard of leather from the champion but beat the count each time before managing to see the round out on his feet.

Gamboa stalked Solis in the third, producing another knockdown but again, Solis was back up to continue. More...

Boxing In America: Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Jorge Solis

By Richard Eberline March 26th, 2011 All Boxing Previews

One of the sport's flashiest champions is making a title defense tonight as Cuban speedster Yuriorkis Gamboa puts his WBA and IBF feather trophies up for grabs against Interim WBA super feather ruler Jorge Solis at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Gamboa, 19-0 (15), has covered a lot of ground in his four year pro career, winning the WBA featherweight strap in 2009, defending it three times and adding the vacant IBF bauble to the collection in his most recent action, a thrilling bout with Orlando Salido in September.

Mexican veteran Solis, 40-2-2 (29), to date has only lost during a 2007 WBC International title bout at super feather to Manny Pacquiao and 2009 IBF feather title fight to Cristobal Cruz, with Solis competitive in both cases.

Gamboa has amazingly fast hands and relies on a very good and fluid offense to keep opponents from punching back much but when they do, the former amateur star has been shown to have a very leaky defense. More...

Boxing In Argentina: Barros vs. Roman For WBA Title In Junin

By Alejandro Tostado March 10th, 2011 All Boxing Previews

An excellent WBA featherweight title clash takes place on Saturday at Polideportivo La Colonia in Junin, Argentina as champion Jonathan Victor Barros meets challenger Miguel Roman.

Barros, 31-1-1 (18), is making his first defense since winning the vacant belt via seventh round stoppage against Irving Berry this past December while Roman, 33-7 (25), is participating in his first world title bout.

Despite Barros holding the WBA crown and going the distance with WBA champion at the time Yuriorkis Gamboa in March, 2010, it's Roman who perhaps has faced the greater number of good fighters.

The 25 year old from Mexico has lost to only to a solid level of opposition since 2008, including Jorge Solis, Eduardo Escobedo, Fernando Beltran Jr, Miguel Beltran Jr and Antonio Escalante.

While all Roman's losses were relatively close contests, two were by split decision and the Ciudad Juarez man has never been stopped during his nine year career. More...

Boxing In Argentina: Barros Wins WBA Title In Las Heras

By Alejandro Tostado December 5th, 2010 All Boxing Results

Jonathan Victor Barros won his first world title last night by stopping opponent Irving Berry for the vacant WBA featherweight belt at Polideportivo Vicente Polimeni in Las Heras, Argentina.

A prior holder of the WBO Latino and Argentine crowns, Barros was just seven months removed from a failed bid to unseat Cuban phenom Yuriorkis Gamboa for the WBA title in which the Mendoza man had to climb of the canvas but finished the bout against the heavy-handed champion.

Berry, of Panama, had previously only lost to future WBA Interim bantam king Nehomar Cermeno in an early contest and brought a 14 fight win streak to the table, including victories for the WBA International, Interim WBO Latino and Panamanian titles.

The challenger started the clash well, managing to keep pace with Barros but after the champion got settled in, his edge in experience began to take its toll. More...
