Elvin Ayala Headlines Boxing Card At Mohegan Sun In February

Super Middleweight seeks retribution against David Banks from Portland, Oregon at Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday, February 23rd

Elvin Ayala (16-1, 7 KO’s) from New Haven, Connecticut is looking for payback against the one man who tarnished his perfect record. On November 24, 2006, David Banks (13-1-1, 2 KO’s) handed Ayala his first loss in seventeen fights by a split decision at The Roxy in Boston.

Now, three months later, Ayala and Banks enter the ring for a rematch at Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday, February 23rd. This fight will be the main event on a spectacular boxing card that will be televised live on the Telefutura network beginning at 8:00pm.

In their first meeting, Banks took the fight with only one week notice when Ayala’s originally slated opponent Freddie Cuevas was forced to withdraw due to an injury he sustained in training. Banks spent Thanksgiving making the cross-country trek from Oregon to Massachusetts to battle Ayala in front of a throng of his supporters who made the trip from neighboring Connecticut to Boston.

During the fight, Banks proved to be the more accurate puncher, particularly his power punches, and even had some success counter-punching the defensive-minded Ayala, who managed to give Banks some trouble with his own stiff jab, something he will likely look to use more in the rematch.

Banks earned a split-decision victory, with Judges Leo Gerstel and Roland Milton scoring the bout 97-94 & 96-95 (Banks), and Robert Kaprielian scoring it 96-94 for Ayala. There were no knockdowns in the fight.

Ayala will look to avenge his lone defeat as a professional. “This is a huge fight for Elvin. He has a great opportunity to avenge his only loss, and show what he’s really made of,” said Ayala’s co-promoter, Richie Cappiello. “Immediately after the first fight Elvin told me ‘Tonight wasn’t my night, but I’ll be back. Hopefully, they’ll give me a rematch.’ Elvin’s been granted his wish; now he must capitalize on it.”
