hmmm,so was tommy hearns world titles at 5 weights from welter up even fought at cruiser and marvin?when he fought leonard(another class act)it was a draw for me.two real pro's SLR refusing to play marvin at what he does best,
This reporter got ... ( 1 year ago by SmelOdies)
This reporter got it right! The American commentators made too big a deal of the right hand which landed cleanly on Hagler. It was a good shot, but it didn't hurt Marvin. ("Caught him a little off guard" is correct, but Al Bernstein I remember shouted "He's hurt! Hagler's hurt!")
Is that Mike Tyson ... ( 1 year ago by cassius66)
Is that Mike Tyson commentating? LOL!
That right hands ... ( 1 year ago by nedmu)
That right hands and uppercuts that hearns landed initially stunned hagler. i would say stunned- not hurt. then haggler walked through them for the next 5 minutes.

Hagler was hurt by the right hand punch in round one. Watch after Hearns lands it, Marvin's right leg gave way and he stopped punching and he was stunned and I think dazed, but he recovered well. He was in great shape obviously.
I totally agree! ... ( 1 year ago by preo2)
I totally agree! Hagler was never hurt in the fight! He was knocked a little off balance, but he was never hurt! He ate Tommy's best punches and walked right thru them! And once Tommy couldn't hurt him, it was pretty much over.
Sort of like Diego ... ( 1 year ago by SmelOdies)
Sort of like Diego Corrales versus Josh Clottey. Now I know Tommy would campaign as high as light heavyweight, but against Marvin, he was throwing welterweight power punches at a middleweight.
if he was hurt he ... ( 1 year ago by gezter)
if he was hurt he did a great job in smashing hearns up afterwards... ffs imagine if he was not hurt he would have killed hearns... two all time great fighters with hagler 1st!!!. may have been diff if hearns was a natural middleweight...
Well being hurt ... ( 1 year ago by NathanHotDogs)
Well being hurt does not mean he would do better or worse. As a matter of fact after the fight Hagler said " those rights hands just made me madder" . He knew he had to pore it on if those right hands kept going.
Fact is Hearns had ... ( 1 year ago by NathanHotDogs)
Fact is Hearns had more guts than Hagler in boxing terms.. Hearns moved up and fought everyone from welterweight to cruiserweight, Hagler only fought the lighter guys. Michael Spinks saw how Hagler only took on lighter guys and challenged Marvin to move up and take his light heavy title and Marvin never did. Yet then he challenged Hearns/Duran/Leonard. That would have been a good test on Marvin.
Not many fighters ... ( 1 year ago by thycrusher)
Not many fighters in history have ever had a good chin as hagler.I mean look at the shots Mugabe landed on Hagler ,the uppercuts and hooks and Hagler just walked through them like he did against Hearns.True Hearns had real ko power in that right hand but Hagler was a tremendous finisher and threw every punch with bad intentions. He was robbed against Leonard who was on his bike for most of the fight and slapped with his puches. You need more than that to take a champions belt.
If you are the king ... ( 1 year ago by shaft226)
If you are the king of the middleweights why move down so the guy can get an advantage. Yes Hagler's biggest fights were aganist fellas who came up in weight to fight him, but every single one of those guys were great fighters. No one bitched and complained when Duran came up from Lightweight to Welterweight to fight Sugar Ray Leonard.

Hagler/Hearns, I wish they would have gone more rounds. Great fighters in great times.

That's why I ... ( 10 months ago by Mistachill)
That's why I respect De La Hoya so much (though I'm not a big fan of his). He may have a few loses on his resume but he seeked out the big name fighters of all weight classes. I don't think Hagler ever even challenged a Super Middleweight. I'm not going to say Hagler didn't have guts but he definitely seemed to lay back and wait for the big names to come to him.
What is this ... ( 9 months ago by Odawg96)
What is this STUPIDITY I'm reading about Hagler not fighting any "true" middleweights? Ya'll must've been born AFTER 1985. He beat the BADDEST of the bad at 160 BEFORE he even WON the title...all those PHILLY fighters. There was NO ONE during his reign at 160 (Tony Ayala included) that stood a chance with him...PERIOD. When you're as great as Hagler was, you make your opponents look like bums.
It's one thing to ... ( 9 months ago by Odawg96)
It's one thing to put on 7 lbs,(147-154) or 6 lbs (154-160), or 8lbs (160-168)...which is what the other guys you named, did and they did it GRADUALLY. It's something else entirely to go from 160 to 175 (168 was a joke division in Hagler's time). 15lbs is a lot for a HEAVYWEIGHT; and it's almost 10% of a middleweight's total mass.
Duran at himself ... ( 9 months ago by Odawg96)
Duran at himself out of lightweight. The reality, though, is that he was at his peak at 135. Yeah, he won titles at heavier weights, but he was never what I would call "great" at those heavier weights. Sure Hagler could've gone to 168, but who wanted to see him fight Murray Sutherland or Chong Pal Park?
Man, this was one ... ( 7 months ago by rejjie3)
Man, this was one classic fight.
