Because he knew it was his only chance of beating Tunney. Dempsey got exactly what he deserved. Another point: It is rare indeed that ANY ref will begin counting at once. A good ref will not start counting until he is positive a boxer is at least headed to a neutral corner. One or two seconds elapse almost every time a fighter is down before a ref. starts his count.
