Tunney could have ... ( 6 months ago by hugofroto)
Tunney could have have beat the count. He was not knocked unconsious. He was a better boxer than Dempsey,Dempsey was pretty good, fast mean and determined.

Long count mystery ... ( 6 months ago by gemsdiamond)
Long count mystery crap! Dempsey had no control and should have retreated back after Tunney's knockdown. If a boxer was to jump in and finish a boxer off today, he would be disqualified.

Tunney did not return to his corner when he knocked down Dempsey, why do you hold them to a double standard? Additionally as long as we are talking about what would happen today, 10 counts begin as soon as the boxer falls not AFTER the opponent goes to a neutral corner.

It's an honor to be related to such an awesome boxer...go Gene Tunney!
Come on, Dempsey ... ( 5 months ago by gemsdiamond)
Come on, Dempsey was getting ready to jump in and knock Tunney out! It's down to the refs interpretation and the better boxer was the unbeaten Gene Tunney.
Who was better is ... ( 5 months ago by herbzilla11)
Who was better is not in dispute, and I know the old saying, "A foul is not a foul unless the ref blows the whistle" but in this case the ref made a mistake and gave tunney 4 extra seconds.
The rules had just ... ( 5 months ago by gemsdiamond)
The rules had just been changed so Dempsey's adrenalin and habit forced him to do what he did. In a fight today, if a boxer charged in after an opponent went down, he would lose a point or be disqualified. Did you expect the ref to continue counting and push Jack back simultaneously?
What you suggest ... ( 5 months ago by herbzilla11)
What you suggest and imply is utterly ridiculous "Did you expect the ref to continue counting and push Jack back simultaneously?" Is EXACTLY what refs do toady. How modern day refs are able to count and talk at the same time is beyond me, but somehow they still manage to do it.
Dempsey didn't box ... ( 5 months ago by maccck1661)
Dempsey didn't box as well as Tunney. Tunney took full advantage of the count whereas Dempsey sprang back up rocked like in a street fight.
This has always ... ( 5 months ago by dposluch)
This has always bothered me. When Tunney knocked Dempsey down in the next round, referee Barry started the count on Dempsey right away, no waving Tunney to a neutral corner. This, in light of the rumors about the Philadelphia mob supporting a Tunney victory, was the biggest controversy of the fight. I wonder if the referee was ever directly questioned about this?
I agree. Referee ... ( 5 months ago by dposluch)
I agree. Referee Barry begins counting on Dempsey the moment his knee touches the canvas in round 8. No sending Tunney to a neutral corner. This, to me, is the real controversy here. Take into account rumors of the Philadelphia mob betting heavily on a Tunney victory, I think Barry owed fight fans an explanation.
The issue of ... ( 4 months ago by soulierinvestments)
The issue of stopwatches and neutral corners is quite irrelevant. The key to a boxing victory in Illinois at that time was control of the referee, and the owners / interests of Tunney controlled [paid off] this particular referee.
Referee started to ... ( 4 months ago by betokkikke)
Referee started to count as soon as "Manassa0s Mauler" hit the floor, so maybe "soulierinvestments" is right talking about Chicago 1927 and amauteur sport was highly appreaciated boxing(when was the american track and field Olympic champion Jim Thorpe unjustly forced to give Coubertin's Comitee back his golden medals?) so if a young sailor payed well referee's time, still that fight will be remembered for the next 15 million years to come worldwide with its fascinating name: "The Long Count"!
But after 80 years ... ( 4 months ago by betokkikke)
But after 80 years from the filming of this great fight known as "The Long Count", a sociologic comment or the a financial judgement such as "souliersinvestment"s here has its logic and must be taken seriously.

What CANNOT be ... ( 3 months ago by bradlee180)
What CANNOT be argued is that a past-his-prime Mauler did in FACT have a PRIME Gene Tunney on the canvas for a full 10 seconds and at least 3 additional seconds for good measure!
Of course Tunney ... ( 3 months ago by Jacob4Freedom)
Of course Tunney could have got up at the real nine count, but would he have been clear enought to survive? That was the only time Tunney was ever down in 77 fights, and he was knocked SILLY. Screw Dave Berry for not picking up the count at five like he should have, then counting on Dempsey in round 8 before Tunney had gone to a neutral corner. Any way you look at it, a past-his-best Dempsey had a prime Tunney down and OUT in this fight.

Dempsey was aware ... ( 2 months ago by CC41DZ)
Dempsey was aware of the rules. The fact to matter was that he tried to pull a fast one by "standing over" Tunney. Why? Because he knew it was his only chance of beating Tunney. Dempsey got exactly what he deserved. Another point: It is rare indeed that ANY ref will begin counting at once. A good ref will not start counting until he is positive a boxer is at least headed to a neutral corner. One or two seconds elapse almost every time a fighter is down before a ref. starts his count.
