Golden Boy Boxing: Daniel Ponce De Leon Returns To Ring November 1

ByBoxing Press 23/10/2008

Golden Boy Promotions returns to HBO Plus on Saturday, November 1 for the second edition of “Next Boxing Generation”. On this edition of the breakout series, Former World Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon returns to fight in Mexico for the first time since 2003 as he takes on Argentina’s Damian Marchiano in a ten round junior featherweight bout at the Gimnasio Manuel Bernard Aguirre in Chihuahua, Mexico.

In the co-featured bout, also scheduled for ten rounds, local junior welterweight contender Javier Castro puts his once-beaten record on the line against rugged veteran Efren Hinojosa.

This scheduled eight bout card of world-class professional boxing presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Romanza Boxing Productions will be aired live on HBO Plus’s “Next Boxing Generation” series beginning at 6:00 p.m. local time.

“Next Boxing Generation”, which was launched in August by Golden Boy Promotions and HBO Latin America Group, features the top Latin American fighters in boxing today in exciting bouts that will appeal to fans across all demographics. In the series’ first doubleheader on September 20 in Monterrey, Mexico, hard-hitting Antonio Pitalua knocked out Former World Lightweight Champion Jose Armando Santa Cruz in six rounds and rising star Eduardo Escobedo outpointed Miguel Roman.

Perhaps the hardest puncher in boxing, pound for pound, former WBO World Junior Featherweight Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon, 34-2 (30), has been thrilling fight fans for years with his exciting style and knockout power. A native of Cuauhtemoc, Mexico, the 28-year old southpaw saw a three-year, ten fight winning streak snapped in June when he was upset by Juan Manuel Lopez. On November 1, Ponce De Leon begins on his road back to the championship close to home in Chihuahua and live on HBO Plus.

Argentina’s Damian “El Resorte” Marchiano, 15-5-1 (5), is admirably upholding his nation’s tradition of producing rugged fighters who can hold their own with anyone in the world. A former Argentine and South American bantamweight champion who has thrown hands with the likes of Abner Mares, Silence Mabuza and Bernard Dunne, Marchiano is eager to test himself at his optimum weight of 122 pounds against De Leon.

Currently sporting an eleven fight winning streak, with four of his last six bouts ending via first round knockout, Chihuahua’s own Javier “El Zorro” Castro, 17-1 (15), is one of the Mexican fight scene’s most promising up and comers. Most recently, the 24-year-old WBC Fecarbox Superlightweight Champion took out seasoned veteran Harrison Cuello in just three rounds on August 15.

Hailing from Ciudad Hidalgo Michoacan, Mexico, 36-year-old Efren Hinojosa, 29-4-1 (17), has impressed boxing observers with not only his entertaining style, but also his stamina within the ropes, where he has gone the 12 round championship distance five times. Like his nickname “Huracan”, he has the ability to sweep into the ring and leave destruction in his wake. A former IBA Continental Lightweight Champion, Hinojosa – a 13-year veteran – is coming home to Mexico on November 1 for his first bout since a hard-fought battle with Miguel Angel Huerta in August of 2007.

Tickets priced at 1500, 1000, 700, 500, 350, 250 and 150 pesos are on sale and can be purchased by calling Superboletos at 613-4444or online at www.superboletos.com.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
