Phill Fury “I want to challenge for titles in 2011”

ByBoxing Press 08/02/2011

London (February 8th, 2011) Phill “Intense” Fury returns to the ring for the first time in 2011 on the undercard of the exciting night of professional boxing at Wembley Arena on Saturday 19th February.

The event is being promoted by Hennessy Sports and will be shown live and exclusive on Premier Sport TV, sky channel 433.

The 19 year old Lancaster based light middleweight has been preparing for his next fight by spending time at the Ingles Wincobank gym and sparring the likes of English champion Adnan Amar, hot prospect Kid Galahad and former WBC champion Junior Witter.

“Training been great and to get the chance to spar with the former world champ was a bonus, he certainly taught me a thing or two with his fast hands and awkwardness and he can certainly hit hard.” Said Phill.

Phill who trains alongside his cousin Tyson Fury is hoping that by the end of the year he will get his chance to fight for honours “I’m looking forward to fighting at Wembley but after that I want to step up and get in a couple of 6 or 8 rounder’s then hopefully I will be in a position to challenge for a Area or English title.”

“I don’t care who I fight, I’m ready for anybody” said Fury.

This great night of Championship boxing at Wembley Arena will be headlined by two British title fights, the first title fight of the night will see Morden’s Lenny Daws looking to defend his British Light Welterweight title for a 3rd time and secure the Lonsdale belt outright when he squares up against Paddington’s Ashley Theophane.

The second British title up for grabs on the night will be for the welterweight crown, this will be contested between Shepherd’s Bush resident John O’Donnell and Craig Watson of Manchester. These two last meet back in April 2009 and produced 12 rounds of exciting boxing in which O’Donnell was crowned the new Commonwealth champion.

To add spice to this already great event, Heavyweight Sensation Tyson Fury will be in a 10 round Special Attraction fight, opponent to be confirmed.

Colchester’s Commonwealth title challenger Lee “Lights Out” Purdy will be in back in action defending his Southern Area title against former British title challenger Michael Lomax of Chingford.

Joining these fighters at Wembley will be a host of talented young boxers including Haddenham’s Tornado Tyler Goodjohn, Islington’s John “Gorilla” Ryder and Brothers Chris and Andreas Evangelou of Enfield.

Premier Sports will also be shown live and exclusive coverage from the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Canada, where former WBC Junior Welterweight champion, Junior “The Hitter” Witter, from Sheffield, is making his welterweight debut against Romanian-born Torontonian Victor Lupo.

Premier Sports TV broadcast monthly boxing from around the globe for the great value price of just £6.99 per month.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. CBS became world champion when more talented British boxers like Okole and Riakporhe did not. In fact he beat both and forced them to go up to heavyweight. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
