Golden Boy Signs Xavier James.

ByBoxing Press 12/01/200512/01/2005

Golden Boy Promotions is wasting no time in getting ready for a stellar 2005 and beyond, as the company is pleased to announce the signing of Xavier D. James Sr. as a Special Advisor for Sports Programming and Strategy. James will perform various advisory functions in connection with the development and acquisition of sports programming for Golden Boy Promotions. “Xavier has been a friend of mine for many years and I am thrilled to have him join Golden Boy Promotions in an advisory capacity” said Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar de la Hoya. “Xavier’s experience in sports programming combined with his knowledge of boxing will certainly assist us in building the Golden Boy brand even further. We already have some exciting plans in the works, which Xavier will concentrate on.”

“Oscar De La Hoya has long been one of the top fighters in the sport of boxing, and now he’s showing that same commitment to excellence as a promoter,” said James. “I’m pleased to join the Golden Boy Promotions team, and we’ve got some exciting plans for boxing fans in the works.” Xavier D. James, Sr. was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. After graduating with honors with a degree in political science from New York University in 1990 and receiving a law degree from New York University School of Law in 1993, he practiced corporate and securities law in New York at the law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP from 1993 to 1996. In 1996, he served as in-house counsel for Viacom’s publishing unit, Simon & Schuster, and went on to serve as in-house counsel for the sports and original programming department of HBO from 1998 to 2000. From 2001 to 2004, he served as vice-president of sports programming for HBO where he was responsible for the acquisition of boxing programming for such HBO shows as “World Championship Boxing,” “Boxing After Dark,” “KO Nation,” and HBO Latino’s “Oscar De La Hoya Presents Boxeo De Oro.” He resides in New York with his wife and three children.

Having established itself as one of the leading promoters in boxing in just three years of operation, Golden Boy Promotions is well on its way to achieving its goal of bringing boxing back to where it should be – back to the days when it competed with baseball as the number one spectator sport in the world. With the help of nationally televised dates on HBO Latino, Telefutura, and ESPN, as well as an exhaustive lineup of local shows, Golden Boy Promotions is bringing boxing back to the people.

The company is also proud to feature an unprecedented collection of the premier fighters in the sport today, such as future hall of famers Oscar De La Hoya, undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera, and former world champion and current junior welterweight contender Jesse James Leija, emerging stars like WBC super bantamweight champion Oscar Larios, undefeated super bantamweight standout Daniel Ponce De Leon, top ranked lightweight Juan Lazcano, hard-hitting bantamweight sensation Jhonny Gonzalez, former two-division world champion Fernando Montiel, unbeaten NABO/NABA super middleweight champion Librado Andrade, middleweight contender Kingsley Ikeke, exciting super middleweight contender Enrique Ornelas, former lightweight world champion Javier Jauregui, and number one super featherweight contender Jorge Rodrigo Barrios, as well as two charismatic young men wh! o represent the future of boxing in 2004 Mexican Olympian Abner Mares, and 2004 US Olympian Vicente Escobedo.

  • Chris Billam-Smith vs Ryan Rozicki 03/06/2026
Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. CBS became world champion when more talented British boxers like Okole and Riakporhe did not. In fact he beat both and forced them to go up to heavyweight. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

  • Jai Opetaia saying what many of us think 26/05/2026
Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
