Impact Boxing: Alex Ibbs Added To Heavyweight “Prizefighter Series” At York Hall April 11

ByBoxing Press 04/04/2008

Werringtonʼs 22 year old heavyweight Alex Ibbs will become the latest Stoke-on-Trent based boxer to seek to win honours in a high profile event. Alex takes part in the first ʽPrizefighter Seriesʼ which takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green on April 11.

The brainchild of sports promoter Barry Hearn, the ʽPrizefighter Seriesʼ pits eight of the UKʼs heavyweights against each other in a knock-out competion; the winner taking £25,000 in prize money. Promoted by Matchroom Sports the event will be televised live by Sky Sports.

Each bout will consist of three three-minute rounds. Quarterfinals, semi-finals and the final will all be held on the same evening. In the event that contests go the distance three BBBofC appointed judges will decide the winner.

Ibbs, 3-1 (0), will travel to London this weekend for the draw for the first round of the competition which will take place live on Sky Sportsʼ Soccer AM programm at 10:30 and will be broadcast on both Sky 1 and Sky Sports 1.

“Iʼm the youngest and least experienced of all the entrants,” said Ibbs today, “so thereʼs no pressure on me. Although Iʼd love to win the whole event very people will be expecting me to.

“However, in this format of three rounds per bout I have as good as chance as anyone, the key to the competition is to be out of the blocks quick and to throw scoring shots rapidly. In this respect my age is an advantage; I am generally regarded as having fast hands for a heavyweight and I can be pretty mobile too when I need to be.

“My training has gone very well and I am ready for the challenge. Iʼve sparred with some very experienced heavyweights and have learned a lot over the last few weeks.

“Whatever the final outcome I intend to give a good account of myself and would love to catch the eye of one of the countryʼs leading promoters. It would be great for me to get a call from one of them after the show.”

In addition to Ibbs, the following heavyweights will also take part in the competition:

Billy Bessey, 7-5 (0), of Portsmouth, England, age 34.

Paul Butlin, 11-5 (2), of Leicestershire, England, age 31.

David Dolan, 7-0 (3), of Sunderland, England, age 28.

Dave Ferguson, 5-0 (2), of North Shields, England, age 32.

Colin Kenna, 16-6-2 (7), of Southampton, England, age 31.

Darren Morgan, 5-3 (3), of Swansea, Wales, age 31.

Martin Rogan, 7-0 (4), of Belfast, Northern Ireland, age 33.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
