Boxing In Mexico: Two WBA Title Fights Tonight

Saturday night’s alright for fightin’ this evening south of the border as there are two WBA title clashes taking place.

WBA super feather champ Jorge Linares is in action at the Plaza de Toros in Nuevo Laredo, meeting the challenge of unheralded opponent Josafat Perez.

Linares, 26-0 (17), a former WBC featherweight titlist from Venezuela, will be making the first defense of the crown he won last November with a stoppage of Whyber Garcia in the fifth.

The lanky 23 year old will be making just his second appearance in Mexico, having fought most of his contests in his adopted homeland of Japan.

Mexican lightweight champion Perez, 12-1 (7), will be taking a massive step up in competition for his first foray into world class.

The 25 year old Mexican southpaw is coming off a split decision loss to Julio Cesar Sanchez Leon in September during a rematch. Leon was 11 pounds heavier at 144 than was Perez in that contest.

At Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo, the little men go at it as light flyweights Juan Jose Landaeta, 25-6-1 (19), and Francisco Rosas, 20-6-2 (12), face off for the vacant Interim WBA title.

Venezuelan southpaw Landaeta is a three-time former world title challenger while Mexico’s Rosas is coming off a majority decision loss while attempting to lift the WBA minimumweight crown.
