Wilkens Mathieu Looks to Pass Another Test Against Esquiva Falcao in Quebec City
There are plenty of unbeaten prospects in boxing, but sooner or later they have to answer a few difficult questions. That’s exactly what awaits Wilkens Mathieu when he headlines against Esquiva Falcao.
The Quebec card, broadcast live on DAZN, has unbeaten prospects, step-up fights and a few matchups that look trickier than the records alone suggest.
Main Event
Wilkens Mathieu (15-0-0) vs Esquiva Falcao (32-2-0)
Mathieu has looked sharp, athletic and confident on the way to 15-0-0, but this is a different sort of assignment. Falcao brings experience, patience and the sort of ring craft that can make a young fighter think twice before rushing in.
That is what makes this interesting. Mathieu is the unbeaten man with momentum, but Falcao has been around long enough to know how to spoil a night like this. If Mathieu deals with him cleanly, it will say plenty about where he is heading at super middleweight.
It feels like the toughest test of Mathieu’s professional career so far, and probably the right one at the right time.
Co-Main / Key Fights
Mehmet Unal (15-0-0) vs Yoann Kongolo (18-3-1)
Unal’s unbeaten record gets a proper check here. Kongolo is experienced, tough enough to ask questions, and not the type of opponent you can just walk through without a plan.
Moreno Fendero (14-0-0) vs Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz (21-1-1)
This might be the sleeper fight on the card. Fendero is unbeaten, but Gonzalez-Ortiz brings a strong record and enough experience to make this a real measuring-stick bout.
Leila Beaudoin (14-2-0) vs Paulina Angel (7-2-2)
Beaudoin will be looking to keep her momentum going at super featherweight against Angel, who comes in with enough on her record to make this more than a simple showcase.
Undercard
Thomas Chabot (12-1-0) meets Jose Antonio Sampedro (13-2-1) at featherweight. On paper, that looks like one of the more evenly balanced fights underneath the headline names.
Erik Israyelyan (5-0-0) faces Johan Guzman (2-1-0) at super featherweight. Israyelyan is still early in his pro career and will want to keep the unbeaten run moving.
Daylen Pepin (2-0-0) takes on Jordan Dzaba (3-3-1) at lightweight. Pepin has the clean record, but Dzaba has had more professional rounds and should not be ignored.
Closing Thoughts
Mathieu vs Falcao is the obvious focus, but the depth of unbeaten fighters on this card gives it a bit more bite. Mathieu, Unal and Fendero all have something to protect, and that usually makes for a tense night. If Mathieu handles Falcao well, the hype gets louder. Simple as that.
