Ashton Sylve vs Joseph Diaz Preview: Young Talent Meets Experience In Long Beach
Friday night in Long Beach has one of those cards where several prospects are trying to move up a level, but the headline fight is the one grabbing most of the attention. Ashton Sylve gets a veteran test against former world champion Joseph Diaz, while a stack of unbeaten fighters underneath look to keep their records intact.
The card streams live on DAZN under the California State Athletic Commission.
Main Event: Ashton Sylve (13-1-0) vs Joseph Diaz (34-9-1)
There is no mystery about what this fight means for Ashton Sylve.
The 13-1-0 prospect has plenty of talent, but Joseph Diaz is the kind of name that tells everyone where a fighter actually stands. Diaz has shared the ring with elite opposition over the years and has seen pretty much every style imaginable.
Sylve is younger, fresher and probably has more upside at this stage of their careers. Diaz, meanwhile, brings experience, durability and the sort of ring IQ that can frustrate younger fighters who expect everything to go their own way.
If Sylve can beat Diaz convincingly, it will say far more than another routine win over a lesser opponent. On the other hand, Diaz has been written off before and still has enough craft to make life difficult for anybody who overlooks him.
It’s a genuine measuring-stick fight and arguably the most interesting matchup of Sylve’s career so far.
Co-Feature
J’Hon Ingram (9-0-0) takes on Devin Cushing (18-0-0) in what could easily end up stealing the show.
Something has to give here because both men arrive unbeaten. Ingram has looked sharp through his first nine professional fights, but Cushing brings considerably more experience with eighteen victories already on his record. For fans who enjoy seeing prospects forced to answer real questions, this one is worth watching.
Key Fights
Ernesto Mercado (18-0-0) faces veteran Juan Carlos Burgos (36-8-3) in a super lightweight contest.
Burgos has been around forever and remains a useful test for younger fighters. Mercado is unbeaten and looking to make another statement, but experienced operators like Burgos rarely make anything easy.
Middleweight prospects collide when Amir Anderson (7-0-0) meets Jonas Sylvain (9-0-1).
Both men are still building their reputations and neither will want to give up an unbeaten record. These are often the fights that end up producing future contenders.
At welterweight, David Lopez (8-0-0) faces Joey Borrero (12-2-0). Lopez continues his development against an opponent with enough experience to ask some awkward questions.
Undercard
Ethan Smith (4-0-0) meets Jose Adolfo Madrigal Rodriguez (10-10-0) in a super middleweight bout as Smith looks to keep his unbeaten start rolling.
Kayla Gomez makes her professional debut against fellow debutant Shayntain Creer. Somebody leaves with their first win, while the other starts their career with a lesson learned.
Kevin Gudino (4-0-0) takes on Alejandro Herrera (5-6-1) in a bantamweight contest.
Daniel Mercado begins his professional career against Alejandro Medina de la Rosa (4-9-0) at super welterweight.
Final Thoughts
Sylve versus Diaz is the headline for a reason, but there is a surprising amount of unbeaten talent scattered throughout this card. If Sylve passes the Diaz test and a few of these prospects deliver, Long Beach could end up producing a very good night of boxing.
