Last night, as part of the Telefutura “Solo Boxeo” Show, promoted by Golden Boy Promotion from McAllen, Texas, bantamweight Jhonny (that’s the way it’s spelled) Gonzalez (28-4-0-25 KO’s) continued his quest for a world title by brutally stopping the always tough Trinidad “Trini” Mendoza (20-9-2-15 KO’s) in three heats. | ![]() |
The first was a classic “feel out” round as both fighters waited to see what the other was trying to accomplish. Once the second round got underway, the action quickly heated up. Gonzalez, working exclusively with his left hand, started painting Mendoza with stiff jabs, hard hooks to the body and head, and crisp uppercuts to the chin. The round was punctuated with a scintillating left hook that left Mendoza dazed as he headed back to his corner. The third round featured much of the same as the freakishly tall and strong Gonzalez keep the shorter “Trini” on the outside. Mendoza went down on a perfectly placed left hook that found his chin. The game Mexican was up at the count of five, only to be put back on the canvas shortly after with another left hook. Before Mendoza’s corner threw in the towel, “Trini” had hit the canvas a total of four times in the third round, all courtesy of Jhonny’s potent left hook. Gonzalez is now wanting to get a crack at IBF bantamweight boss Rafael Marquez.
