Boxing In Britain: Friday Night Results

There were two fight cards in the UK last night with former world champions Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe as promoters.

Hatton’s bill took place at the Velodrome in his hometown of Manchester and featured a brace of six and four rounders.

The big name on the bill was that of ex-European, Commonwealth and British super bantam champion Michael Brodie, 35-3-2 (23), who had been out of the ring since losing a WBO

Returning as a super feather, the 35 year old local hero felt the ring rust acutely as he was dropped by opponent Mark Alexander, 8-4 (0), of London in the first and third frames before finding his rhythm to stop Alexander at 1:25 of the fourth after landing a perfect right hand.

Former British featherweight champ Andy Morris, 17-2 (6), continued his own comeback with destruction of Spanish import Jesus Garcia Simon, 12-13-2 (2), who never made it out of the first round, at lightweight.

Ex-Commonwealth welter king Craig Watson, 16-2 (5), won all six rounds as a light middle on the way to outpointing seasoned middleweight campaigner Matt Scriven, 13-54 (1).

Heavily hyped super feather prospect Joe Murray, 3-0 (0), outpointed journeyman Steve Gethin, 11-48-3 (6), over four rounds at lightweight by a score of 40-36.

Calzaghe’s offering happened at the Leisure Centre in Newport, Wales and featured a former world champion along with an ex-Commonwealth titlist.

Light middleweight Bradley Pryce, 28-7 (17), returned from his shattering loss to Matthew Hall for the Commonwealth crown in March by outpointing well-traveled veteran Michael Monaghan, 18-26 (2) over ten frames by a score of 100-91.

Gavin “The Rock” Rees, 28-1 (14), also got back on track following the loss of his WBA light welter strap five months ago as he forced a four round referee stoppage of Johnny Greaves, 2-37 (1), who was coming off a rare victory. featherweight title challenge to Scott Harrison four years ago.
