Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron: Super Welterweight Showdown Headlines Birmingham Card

Chantelle Cameron and Mikaela Mayer have both spent enough time at the top end of women’s boxing that neither needs much introduction. Put them together, though, and you get a main event that looks difficult to call for all the right reasons.

Cameron brings a 22-1-0 record into the super welterweight contest, while Mayer arrives at 22-2-0. There is plenty further down the card too, with Caroline Dubois facing unbeaten Amelia Moore and a busy undercard mixing established names with fighters still trying to push themselves up the ladder.

The card will be broadcast on Sky in the United Kingdom and ESPN+ in the United States.

Main Event: Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron

Chantelle Cameron (22-1-0) against Mikaela Mayer (22-2-0) is one of those fights where picking a winner becomes harder the longer you think about it.

Cameron has made a career out of being difficult to shift from her rhythm. She is comfortable working at a strong pace, putting combinations together and making opponents fight for every minute of a round. Mayer, though, is hardly the sort of opponent who is going to stand there and allow Cameron to dictate everything.

Mayer comes into the fight talking like a boxer with complete confidence in where her game is right now. That matters because this could become a battle over who gets to set the terms. If Cameron can consistently get onto the front foot and make Mayer work at her tempo, she could turn it into her sort of fight. Mayer will want to disrupt that, create the exchanges she wants and make Cameron adjust.

There is also very little separating them on experience or records. Cameron has lost once in 23 professional fights; Mayer twice in 24. Neither is arriving as somebody being given a chance at the elite level to see what happens. They are already there.

My feeling is that this could be decided by relatively small things rather than one boxer simply taking over. A couple of cleaner combinations, who finishes rounds stronger, who gets her way when they are both trying to establish position. It has the look of a fight where the scorecards could be getting argued about afterwards.

Co-Feature: Caroline Dubois vs Amelia Moore

Caroline Dubois (13-0-1) faces unbeaten Amelia Moore (4-0-0) at lightweight, and it would be very easy to concentrate on what might come next for Dubois. Moore has been pretty clear that she would rather everyone concentrate on Saturday first.

Dubois has the deeper professional record and enters as the established name of the pair, while Moore has won all four of her professional contests. For Moore, this is a sizeable jump in profile and a chance to upset the plans being discussed around her opponent.

That makes it more interesting than a routine showcase. Dubois will be expected to win, but Moore has absolutely nothing to gain from treating her like she is supposed to.

Key Fights

Reina Tellez (13-1-1) meets Jessica Barry (10-1-0) at featherweight. With just two defeats between them, this is another well-matched contest on paper and an opportunity for either fighter to make a useful move forward.

Former world champion Terri Harper (16-3-2) returns at super lightweight against Miranda Reyes (9-3-1). Harper has considerably more experience at the top level, but Reyes gets the chance to change the direction of her own career by beating a recognisable name.

At lightweight, Scott Melvin (12-1-0) takes on Dylan Cheema (11-3-0). The records alone make this one worth keeping an eye on rather than treating it as another undercard appearance.

Other Title Fights

Tysie Gallagher (10-2-0) faces unbeaten Brandi Robinson (5-0-0) at super bantamweight. Gallagher has the advantage in professional experience, while Robinson gets the opportunity to protect that unbeaten record against a fighter who has already been through considerably more rounds as a pro.

Undercard

Unbeaten Gemma Paige Richardson (4-0-0) faces a substantial experience test against Kirstie Bavington (10-5-2) at super lightweight. Four professional fights against 17 makes the contrast obvious enough.

Shannon Courtenay (11-3-0) continues her career at super flyweight against Ebonie Cotton (2-2-0).

India’s Neeraj Goyat (20-4-2) brings plenty of professional experience into his super lightweight contest with Yessin Koulali (8-1-0).

Unbeaten flyweight Hamza Uddin (6-0-0) meets the vastly more experienced Jemsi Kibazange (22-15-4). Uddin keeps the perfect record if he wins, but Kibazange has been around long enough that there should be plenty for the youngster to work out.

Finally, Brandon Bethell (7-1-0) faces Jorge Luis Huerta Balleza (4-20-0) at super lightweight.

Cameron and Mayer Take Centre Stage

Dubois-Moore has some intrigue and there are several undercard fights worth catching, but Cameron against Mayer is the reason to tune in. Two experienced fighters, very similar records and neither with an obvious reason to take a backwards step.

This one could get interesting very quickly.
