Lenar Perez vs Thabiso Mchunu Preview: Unbeaten Cruiserweight Faces Veteran Test

Lenar Perez has made it to 16-0 without a blemish, but on Thursday night he gets the sort of opponent who should tell us a lot more about where he really stands at cruiserweight.

Lenar Perez meets Thabiso Mchunu in the main event in Quebec, with the card broadcast live on DAZN. Perez brings the unbeaten record and momentum. Mchunu brings 33 professional fights and the experience of having been around the upper end of the cruiserweight division.

There is plenty of unbeaten talent further down the bill too, including Jhon Orobio, Moreno Fendero and Wyatt Sanford.

Main Event: Lenar Perez vs Thabiso Mchunu

Lenar Perez (16-0-0) takes on Thabiso Mchunu (25-8-0) at cruiserweight, and this looks like a sensible step up for Perez.

Mchunu’s record obviously isn’t as pretty, but that isn’t really the point here. At 25-8-0, the South African has vastly more professional rounds and fights behind him than Perez. For an unbeaten fighter trying to move forward, that sort of opponent can be far more revealing than another carefully selected name with a shiny record.

Perez has reached 16-0 and now needs to show that he can deal with somebody carrying genuine veteran experience. He’ll start as the unbeaten man on the rise, but Mchunu isn’t being brought in simply to make up the numbers.

That’s what makes the fight interesting. If Perez deals with him comfortably, it feels like a meaningful result rather than just win number 17. If Mchunu can drag him into a more awkward fight, we’ll get to see how Perez reacts when things aren’t necessarily going exactly his way.

Co-Feature: Jhon Orobio vs Antonio Moran

Another unbeaten fighter gets an experienced opponent when Jhon Orobio (18-0-0) faces Antonio Moran (31-8-1) at super lightweight.

Orobio has already put together an 18-0 record, while Moran enters with 40 professional bouts on his record. It follows a similar theme to the main event: unbeaten prospect against a man who has been doing this for a long time.

For Orobio, it’s another chance to keep the unbeaten run moving while dealing with an opponent carrying considerably more professional experience. Moran, meanwhile, has the opportunity to spoil those plans.

Key Fight: Moreno Fendero vs Stephane Fondjo

The super-middleweight meeting between Moreno Fendero (15-0-0) and Stephane Fondjo (15-2-1) might quietly be one of the better-looking fights on the card.

Fendero puts his unbeaten record on the line against somebody with an almost identical number of professional fights. Fondjo’s 15-2-1 record makes this look much less like routine undercard matchmaking and more like a proper test of where Fendero is at.

Undercard

Canadian lightweight Wyatt Sanford (7-0-0) continues his professional career against Costin Ion (11-5-2). Sanford is still only seven fights into his professional run, while Ion comes in with considerably more bouts behind him.

At light heavyweight, two unbeaten fighters meet as Keven Beausejour (3-0-0) faces Leonel Silva Salas (1-0-0). Somebody’s perfect record has to go unless they finish level.

Victor Tremblay (3-0-0) meets Kesny Joseph (1-1-0) at featherweight, with Tremblay looking to extend his unbeaten start.

The card also features Nickenson Denis (1-0-0) against Jaheem Estwick (1-2-0) at super middleweight. Denis is right at the beginning of his professional career, so these early outings are about getting rounds and building from fight to fight.

The main event is the obvious attraction, but there is a clear theme running through this card: unbeaten fighters being asked progressively tougher questions. Perez against Mchunu is the biggest of them. Time to find out a little more about that 16-0.
