Giovani Santillan returns to familiar territory on Friday, September 11, but ProBox has not handed him a comfortable homecoming. The San Diego fighter meets former world champion Abass Baraou in a ten-round super-welterweight main event at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California.

The card also has a genuinely interesting Mexican clash between Luis Alberto Lopez and Daniel Lugo, while Dominic Valle and Francois Scarboro Jr put their unbeaten records on the line. The California State Athletic Commission will oversee the event.

Giovani Santillan vs Abass Baraou

Giovani Santillan (35-1-0) has won three consecutive fights since suffering the only defeat of his career against Brian Norman Jr in May 2024. Now operating at super-welterweight, he gets a serious examination against a man who was competing at world-title level at the start of the year.

Abass Baraou (17-2-0) arrives following a close split-decision defeat to Xander Zayas. That result cost Baraou his world title, but it hardly pushed him out of the division’s leading group. He remains a difficult, experienced opponent who is unlikely to be unsettled by fighting in Santillan’s part of California.

There is a decent contrast here. Santillan is at his best when he can keep working, apply pressure and turn the contest into a physically demanding fight. Baraou is capable of boxing at a measured pace and will try to stop the hometown favourite from building that momentum. Santillan cannot afford to take too long settling into the heavier division, because Baraou is good enough to bank rounds while an opponent is still finding his range.

It is a well-matched main event and a dangerous one for both men. Santillan has home support and recent winning form; Baraou has operated at the higher level at 154lbs. I would not be surprised if this remains close right through the ten rounds.

Co-Main Event: Luis Alberto Lopez vs Daniel Lugo

Former IBF featherweight champion Luis Alberto Lopez (32-3-0) faces Daniel Lugo (28-4-1) in the co-feature at super-featherweight.

Lopez has never been the sort of boxer who gives opponents a straightforward night. His unusual rhythm, awkward attacks and willingness to throw from strange positions can make him horrible to read. Lugo has plenty of experience of his own, though, and this all-Mexican meeting could easily become one of the most entertaining fights on the card.

Key Fight: Dominic Valle vs Francois Scarboro Jr

Two unbeaten super-featherweights meet over ten rounds as Dominic Valle (13-0-0) takes on Francois Scarboro Jr (14-0-0).

This is matchmaking worth applauding. Neither man has a defeat to explain away and one of them will leave Oceanside with a meaningful step forward on his record. With 27 professional wins between them, it should tell us considerably more than another routine unbeaten-prospect outing would have done.

Undercard

Unbeaten middleweight Hebert Conceicao Sousa (11-0-0) meets Jose de Jesus Adame Chio (15-0-1). Sousa’s perfect record is being tested against an opponent who has yet to be beaten in 16 professional appearances.

Experienced super-lightweight Mercito Gesta (34-4-3) faces Jorge de Jesus (14-2-0). Gesta has seen plenty during his long career, but De Jesus has the chance to claim the most recognisable name on his record.

At welterweight, Angel Munoz (9-2-0) goes up against Sebastian Nieto Reyes (4-2-0).

Unbeaten super-lightweight Daniel Morales (9-0-0) meets Lorenzo Vazquez Avalos (4-1-0), with both men looking to build on promising starts to their careers.

Another unbeaten prospect appears at super-featherweight as Julian Montalvo (7-0-0) takes on Anthony Cruz Herrera (4-1-0).

Abel Mejia (10-1-0) faces Jorge Alberto Ayala Lopez (2-3-0) in a super-lightweight contest.

Opening the listed card at welterweight, unbeaten Alfredo Quinones (4-0-1) meets Judah Yisrael (1-2-1).

Santillan has the crowd, but Baraou may be the toughest man on the entire bill. Add Lopez’s awkwardness and the two unbeaten super-featherweights, and this is a card with a bit more bite than the headline alone suggests.
