Last “Next Boxing Generation” Show Of 2009 Hits Mexico Dec 12

ByBoxing Press 12/10/2009

HBO Plus’ exciting “Next Boxing Generation” series returns to Mexico for its final episode of 2009 on Saturday, December 12, for an action-packed night of professional boxing at the Auditorio Miguel Barragan in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

In the main event, highly regarded Nicaraguan contender Rene “Super Chirizo” Gonzalez takes on one of Mexico’s hometown heroes in Ciudad Obregon’s Noe “Platanito” Bolaños who looks to impress his local fans in a 12 round lightweight showdown for the WBO Latino belt.

The televised co-feature will see Chihuahua’s rising undefeated welterweight star Luis Enrique Grajeda taking on fellow undefeated prospect Ruben Amezcua of Torreon, Mexico in an eight round bout. While in the opening televised fight, Tlanepantla, Mexico’s undefeated lightweight Pablo Cesar Cano will see action in a six round bout against Carlos Urias of Los Mochis Sinaloa, Mexico.

Currently ranked first in the world by the WBC and second by the WBA in the junior lightweight division, Managua, Nicaragua’s Rene Gonzalez (25-1-1, 20 KO’s) is rapidly closing in on a junior lightweight title shot. Unbeaten in 11 bouts dating back to 2007, the 24-year-old knows he will face a stiff test in the always tough Bolaños, a fighter who has never been stopped in his career.

23-year old Noe Bolaños (20-4-1, 11 KO’s) soared up the ranks in his first three years as a professional, winning his first 19 bouts and taking the WBA Continental Americas Featherweight Title along the way. In 2007, Bolaños, a proud native of Ciudad Obregon Sonora, Mexico, hit a rough patch in his career, but with a renewed dedication to his craft and a determination to get to the top, Bolanos expects big things in the coming years, beginning with his bout against Gonzalez.

The December 12 co-main event sees Chihuahua’s Luis Enrique Grajeda (7-0, 6 KO’s) in action against a fellow undefeated fighter in his toughest test to date as a professional. An amateur star who won Mexican Championships in 2005 and 2007 and made it to the 2007 Pan Am Games quarterfinals, Grajeda is well on his way to surpassing that success in the professional ranks.

Unbeaten as a pro with five first round knockouts in seven fights, Grajeda most recently halted Juan Carlos Diaz in two rounds this October and on December 12 he will compete in an eight round welterweight bout against Ruben Amezcua (6-0, 2 KO’s) of Torreon. Amezcua has garnered some high praise in his young career as well, winning his first six professional bouts against quality opposition.

Also featured on the “Next Boxing Generation” telecast will be 20-year-old lightweight phenom Pablo Cesar Cano (16-0-1, 13 KO’s) of Tlalnepantla Estado de Mexico. Cano is 4-0 in 2009 and getting better with each bout, making him a prime prospect for future title honors at 135 pounds. Cano will face Carlos Urias (23-26, 17 KO’s) of Los Mochis Sinaloa, Mexico in a six round bout.

Gonzalez vs. Bolaños, is a 12 round lightweight bout which is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Producciones Deportivas de Ricardo Maldonado Jr. Doors will open at 6:30pm and the first fight will begin at 7:30pm. The bouts will air on the HBO Plus service in Latin America on a delayed basis on Saturday, December 19 beginning at 9:30pm ET.

Tickets, priced at 400 pesos (VIP Ringside), 300 pesos (Preferred Ringside), 200 pesos (Blue Zone), 100 pesos (Yellow Zone) and 50 pesos (Orange Zone) are on sale now and available at Auditorio Miguel Barragan, IMPODE (Instituto Potosino del Deporte) or by calling 52-444-128-8462 or 52-444-128-84667.

  • Errol Spence v Tim Tszyu - June 2026 4/7/2026
The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings. I am concerned that Spence has not fought for years now and having no warm up. This may show that he has not much left and cashing in. Tszyu secured a one-sided unanimous decision wi […]

Rene’s not talked about much. Even here in Puerto Rico he’s not as well known as Xander Zayas or even Oscar Collazo. But he’s got 2 of the 4 belts in the division, and tonight he defends them against Masataka Taniguchi in Japan. Gotta hand it to him. This is his 3rd straight fight in Japan. I admire any fighter who’s willing to go halfway around the world to […]
