Boxing In Britain: Haskins Defeats Broadhurst In Wales

Last night at the Leisure Centre in Newport, Wales, British super flyweight Lee Haskins defeated Commonwealth king Don Broadhurst to become a double champion.

Enjoying a rare height advantage, southpaw Haskins made good use of his awkward skills, keeping Haskins off balance for the entire 12 round bout.

It was the greater experience of the British champion which allowed him to control the pace of the bout, which played out as a difficult affair with more grappling than boxing.

When the messy contest came to a close, Haskins swept the scorecards by marks of 117-113 and 116-113 twice, pushing his CV to 20-2 (10).

Broadhurst suffers his first loss as a pro, slipping to 11-1 (3).

Light middle Sam Webb, 15-1 (4), outpointed Paul Morby, 5-5 (0), over six while former British bantam champion Martin Power, 21-5 (8), produced a major career turnaround by stopping ex-British and Commonwealth title challenger Matthew Edmonds, 10-4 (2), in the fifth round.

Featherweight Jamie Arthur, 16-2 (4), continued his comeback by outpointing seasoned vet Mickey Coveney, 9-8 (1), over six.
