8 Count Boxing: “Windy City Fight Night 8” Set For Jan 29

ByBoxing Press 19/12/2009

Advance tickets are now on sale for “Windy City Fight Night” set for Friday, January 29th at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion, it was announced today by Dominic Pesoli, President of 8 Count Productions.

“We’re very excited to have two of Chicago’s finest, Donovan George and Ivan Popoca in the headline bouts. Both have continued to improve and are amongst the most outstanding young prospects in boxing” said Pesoli. “ Chicago fight fans have really shown a passion for both guys and were very proud to have them on the same card.”

The 25 year old George, 18-0-1 (16KO’s), is coming off his finest performance to date, a brutal fourth round stoppage of Jason Naugler on November 6th at the UIC Pavilion.

“Naugler was much more experienced and had never been stopped. Donovan showed great patience boxing throughout the first three rounds and then when he had him hurt in fourth, he closed the show in style” continued Pesoli.

Also undefeated, Popoca, 12-0-1 (8KO’s), is coming off a sixth round stoppage of Mike Gonzales on September 26th, his fourth win in 2009. With his devastating power in both hands and willingness to trade inside, Popoca has been amongst Chicago’s most popular fighters since turning professional three years ago.

“Ivan really improved dramatically in 2009. He’s kept the ability and willingness to trade in the middle of the ring but he’s also turned into a much better boxer as he showed in wins against Hector Alatorre and Mike Gonzales in his last two bouts. 2010 should be a terrific year for him” said Pesoli.

The undercard features some of Chicago ’s best young fighters in popular heavyweight newcomer David Latoria, 4-0-0 (2KO’s), lightweight Antonio Avila, 2-0-0 (1KO) and lightweight Bobby Jaskierny, 4-2-0 (2KO’s).

Also on the undercard, super bantamweights, Sergio Montes De Oca and Sergio Cristobal, will attempt to settle their cross town score. The 23 year old Montes De Oca has impressively moved to 3-0-0 since turning professional twelve month ago.

In his last bout, Montes De Oca won a hard fought four round decision over LaShaun Blair at the UIC Pavilion on May 29th. On the same card, Cristobal lost a very close majority decision in his pro debut to Juan Carlos Fernandez.

Further details on this event will be announced shortly.

Advance tickets starting at $31 are available through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com), the UIC Pavilion Box Office (312-413-5740) and the 8 Count Productions’ Office (312-226-5800).

Doors on the evening of the event will open at 7pm with the first bell at 8pm. The UIC Pavilion is located at 525 S. Racine , just one block south of the Eisenhower Expressway. The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings. I am concerned that Spence has not fought for years now and having no warm up. This may show that he has not much left and cashing in. Tszyu secured a one-sided unanimous decision wi […]
