Perhaps the UK’s most promising young boxer was in action again last night as Nathan Cleverly won the vacant European light heavyweight title.
Just four days before his 23rd birthday, the tall Welshman saw things go his way against Italy’s Antonio Brancalion, outboxing the veteran in every round until producing a stoppage at 1:15 of the fifth.
Cleverly, 19-0 (9), came into the bout as the British and Commonwealth champion and adds the European crown to his growing collection. Cleverly has now stopped his last six opponents.
Ex-European Union belt holder Brancalion, 32-8-2 (8), was coming off a one round KO loss to Juergen Braehmer in June for the European belt.
Lightweight Kevin Mitchell, 31-0 (23), continued his drive to a world title shot as the Londoner retained his WBO Intercontinental crown with a second round KO of Colombia’s Ignacio Mendoza.
