Boxing Preview: Vic Darchinyan vs. Rodrigo Guerrero

WBC and WBA super flyweight champ Vic Darchinyan sees action tonight as the Sydney southpaw defends his belts against Rodrigo Guerrero at Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, CA.

Since losing his bid for the IBF bantam crown against Joseph Agbeko in July, 34 year old Darchinyan, 33-2-1 (27), has been in with lesser competition since returning to the super fly division, stopping Tomas Rojas in December and now facing Guerrero.

Guerrero, 13-1-1 (9), also a lefty, has only 15 bouts under his belt but does hold two good wins against the likes of Luis Maldonado and Juan Alberto Rosas.

The only advantage Guerrero holds in this matchup is that of youth but he’ll need a sturdy chin if he is to stand and trade with the heavy-handed and far more experienced Darchinyan.

Agbeko did just that but was a full-fledged bantam while Nonito Donaire proved that Darchinyan could be outboxed.

On the undercard, Australia’s top prospect, Lenny Zappavinga, 22-0 (15), goes for the vacant IBO lightweight championship against Fernando Angulo, 22-6 (14), who came in three pounds overweight and won’t be eligible for the title should he win.
