It wasn’t pretty but Mexican legend Erik Morales won his first professional fight in over two years by pounding out a decision over Nicaraguan slugger Jose Alfaro at La Explanada Del Palacio Municipal last night in Monterrey, Mexico.
Both men were fighting two divisions above their optimum weight classes and not surprisingly the contest devolved into a stand and trade slugfest from the midway point onward.
Despite the ring rust from such a long period of inactivity, Morales showed brief flashes of his former brilliance as he and Alfaro maintained a high rate of activity through the 12th and final round of the bout.
Morales, 49-6 (34), a world champion at super bantam, featherweight and super feather, captured the WBC International welter title with a 117-111 and 116-112 (twice) unanimous points verdict.
Alfaro drops to 23-6 (20), and has now gone 3-3 since holding the WBA lightweight title in 2007.
In a shocking upset, former WBA light heavyweight champ Hugo Hernan Garay, 32-5 (17), was knocked out in the first round by ex-NABF titlist Chris Henry, 25-2 (20), during a WBA title eliminator.
Unbeaten heavyweight David Rodriguez, 33-0 (31), stopped Daniel Bispo, 22-13 (16), in the second.
