In the main event of a fight card held Saturday at the Agua Caliente Casino, Rancho Mirage, California, welterweight David Estrada, 24-6 (15), scored a shocking eighth round stoppage of undefeated contender Orlando Lora, 26-1-1 (18), in an outcome which was anything but an upset.
Estrada, who emerged unmarked, came forward all night and walked Lora down, winning every round by landing vicious counter rights and crisp left uppercut-right lead combinations that turned Lora’s face into a cut up mess.
Estrada’s lightning fast counter rights scored all night on Lora’s unprotected head and turned the contest into a lopsided brutal affair. The ringside doctor entered the ring and wisely stopped the contest, saving Lora from further punishment.
The key to this fight was experience. Although he has fallen short in some of his major bouts with Andre Berto, Shane Mosley, Kermit Cintron and Luis Carlos Abregu, Estrada showed in this bout that he is a world class contender worthy of a title shot, a cut above Lora’s abilities.
After the bout, Estrada noted in the post fight interview with Teddy Atlas that he had made key changes in his personal life that enabled him to become a more mature fighter.
