Boxing Result: Adamek Defeats Arreola By Majority Decision

Tomasz Adamek’s Cinderella run through the heavyweight division continued last night at Citizen’s Bank Arena in Ontario, CA as the IBF International strapholder found a way to beat former world title challenger Chris Arreola via majority decision.

Ex-cruiserweight and light heavy champion Adamek was, as expected, the quicker man of both hand and foot but that didn’t stop the much larger Arreola from finding the target with big shots during the contest.

But Adamek proved able to absorb the heavy leather and keep coming behind the surprising, yet effective, strategy of taking the fight to Arreola.

Adamek swept the first three rounds by outboxing Arreola, beating the Californian to the punch but Arreola managed to narrow the distance between the two, which is exactly what the smaller man didn’t want to occur.

This came into play during the fourth round as Arreola hit paydirt, landing his vaunted power punches over the next four rounds and appearing to hurt Adamek on more than one occasion.

The gritty Pole never lost heart and started his comeback in the ninth when Arreola started to flag from his previous efforts. Adamek nearly paid dearly for his aggression in the very next round as Arreola landed bombs but the 33 year old Jersey City resident refused to give ground.

Adamek regrouped, reasserting his authority over the final two frames, outworking and outlanding Arreola to post a 117-111, 115-113 and 114-114 majority decision victory.

Adamek now stands at 41-1 (27) and is likely nearing a world title opportunity while Arreola has now lost two of his last three, falling to 28-2 (25).

Chief support bout featured Mexican star Alfredo Angulo, 18-1 (15), who retained his Interim WBO light middleweight crown via dramatic 11th round KO of Joel Julio, 35-4 (31).
