Thursday at Halle Georges Carpentier in Paris, ex-WBC/WBA cruiserweight champ Jean Marc Mormeck took a big step at heavyweight by defeating perennial contender Fres Oquendo via a narrow points verdict.
As expected, the shorter Mormeck tried to make it a fight, pressing the taller and heavier Oquendo but getting outboxed during the early rounds for his trouble.
The Frenchman managed to close distance in the middle rounds and dealt out punishment upstairs and down but by the later frames, had run out of energy and thus the ability to take the fight to his American adversary.
Oquendo made Mormeck pay for running out of gas early, controlling the pace of the last few rounds and nearly stopping the former cruiserweight during the final stanza.
But the judges voted for local man Mormeck’s aggression as Jean Marc took home a surprising 96-96, 96-95 and 96-94 unanimous decision.
Mormeck improves to 35-4 (22), while Oquendo falls to 32-6 (21).
Former European lightweight king Anthony Mezzache, 18-5-3 (4), stayed busy as he awaits a world title opportunity by posting an eight round decision against Istvan Nagy, 12-7 (7).
