Boxing Quotes: WBA Super Middle Champion Andre Ward

ByBoxing Press 11/06/201011/06/2010

On Saturday, June 19, on Showtime at 10 p.m., ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast, Andre Ward (20-0, 13 KOs), of Oakland, will make the first defense of the World Boxing Association 168-pound title against world-ranked Allan Green (29-1, 20 KOs) of Tulsa, Okla., in a Group Stage 2 bout in the Super Six World Boxing Classic at the Oracle Arena.

The event is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions, TNT Boxing and Dibella Entertainment and sponsored by Corona, Oakland Tribune and River Rock Casino.

What Ward said Wednesday at a press conference.

Concerning his tremendous fan support in Oakland:

“It’s a lot of responsibility. Too much is given, much is required. The fan base is growing, the media attention is growing and this is what I signed up for. I’m embracing it, learning how to deal with it and just thankful to be on a platform and a stage like this and eager to just keep working and be aggressive.’’

Concerning what kind of fight he is expecting from Green:

“At this stage and this level you have to be ready for everything the opponent has to bring. In my mind I’m preparing for a very physical and very grueling fight. And if there is anything left, then that’s fine. That’s what I’m prepared for, to do whatever needs to be done to keep my title. I never wanted to be a guy who won a title and then lost it his first defense. I want to be a guy that reigns for a long time.’’

Concerning trainer Virgil Hunter and his strict regimen:

“We had our days of him being the task master when I was younger, with him implementing the standard of what he was looking for in me. Every time I would come to the gym or anytime I would run and work out, he expected the highest level out of me, but fortunately he doesn’t have to push me like that (any more). He encourages me; he’s a man of wisdom.

“We work well hand in hand. Honestly, we don’t have to say much when we train. Don’t get me wrong — we talk strategy, but we can look at each other and know what the other one is thinking. We’re always on the same page. It’s a tremendous relationship. It’s more than just trainer and pupil. It’s like a father and son relationship.’’

Closing thoughts:

“I want to just give a big thank you to the fans. I thank them for the support. I don’t take these media days lightly when people show up. They can be doing anything right now but they come down and take the time out of their day.

“I want to say thank you to the media, even the ones who maybe aren’t too particularly fond of me. I mean I understand that. It’s no big deal. I just appreciate the support I get and I want to be worthy of it. I want them to know that I see you; I’m speaking of the fans. I want to continue to do my part to put on great performances and also represent myself outside the ring in a respectable way’’

Ben Whittaker will be heading across the pond if he beats Braian Suarez on Saturday night. Callum Smith has pulled out of the David Morrell fight which was due to take place in his hometown Liverpool on 18rh April. I was looking forward to this fight. Ben Whittaker will be headlining the event now. talksp […]
  • Errol Spence v Tim Tszyu - June 2026 07/04/2026
The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings. I am concerned that Spence has not fought for years now and having no warm up. This may show that he has not much left and cashing in. Tszyu secured a one-sided unanimous decision wi […]

Negotiations for a WBO and WBA welterweight unification clash between Devin Haney and Rolly Romero have reportedly collapsed. Organisers had planned for the fight to headline a PBC event on May 30, live on Amazon Prime PPV. Haney has turned down the fight. The reason for Haney pulling the plug is that he wasn’t offered a guaranteed purse. PBC instead propose […]
  • Rene Santiago to defend his WBA and WBO junior flyweight belts in Japan 02/04/2026
Rene’s not talked about much. Even here in Puerto Rico he’s not as well known as Xander Zayas or even Oscar Collazo. But he’s got 2 of the 4 belts in the division, and tonight he defends them against Masataka Taniguchi in Japan. Gotta hand it to him. This is his 3rd straight fight in Japan. I admire any fighter who’s willing to go halfway around the world to […]

Brad Paul pulled off an upset Saturday night coming from behind to stop the undefeated Shakiel Thompson. "My corner had told me ‘forget about boxing, do what you do best, now it’s time to have […]
