Boxing In Mexico: Romero Regains WBC Title In San Juan Del Rio

Just four months after Omar Nino Romero fought to a technical draw with WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol, the 34 year old from Guadalajara produced an upset last night in a bullring in San Juan Del Rio as the two fighters squared off in a rematch.

Mayol took the lead early on as the Filipino set a pace that Romero was hard pressed to match but control of the bout, which was marred by headbutts that produced cuts above Romero’s eyes and caused Mayol two lost points, began to go back and forth between the pair by the midway point.

In the later rounds Mayol slowed down, allowing Romero to step up his activity and win rounds behind a whipping left hook but the Mexican could never truly boss the action.

The final frames were much the same as the men battled back and forth until the bell sounded to end the contest after 12 contentious rounds.

The final scores favored Romero by margins of 115-112, 115-111 and 117-109, allowing “The Giant Killer” to recapture the WBC title he held in 2006.

Mayol drops to 26-5-2 (20), after engaging in his fifth straight world title bout in which he has produced a record of 1-2-2.

At Meson de los Deportes in Tepic, Filipino flyweight Edren Dapudong, 18-2 (10), shockingly upset big punching Guadalajara southpaw Jesus Jimenez, 28-6 (20), ending the 15 bout win streak of Jimenez by first round KO.

With the victory, Dapudong wins his tenth consecutive fight and captures the WBC silver title.
