Boxing Result: Moreno Retains WBA Title In Cermeno Rematch

In a hotly anticipated rematch, Anselmo Moreno once again retained his WBA bantamweight title via split decision against challenger Nehomar Cermeno last night at Arena Roberto Duran in Panama City, Panama.

Just five months after posting the same result in Cermeno’s homeland of Venezuela, Moreno pulled it out again via scores of 117-112 and 115-113 while Cermeno won the third by a margin of 115-113.

Moreno’s southpaw style proved dominant early but the hard charging challenger started to connect by the middle rounds before Moreno regained control.

The final frames were difficult to score as both tiring boxers threw everything they had until the 12th had run its course.

The judges favored Moreno’s control and accuracy over Cermeno’s aggression but given the closeness of the first and second contests, there could be a third clash.

The chief support bout featured middleweight Gennady Golovkin, 19-0 (16), flattening Milton Nunez, 21-2-1 (19), in just one round to capture the Interim WBA title.
