Boxing In Germany: Sturm Puts WBA Belt At Risk Tonight In Cologne

WBA middleweight champ Felix Strum ends 14 months of inactivity tonight when he faces challenger Giovanni Lorenzo at Lanxess Arena in Cologne.

Sturm, 33-2-1 (14), was last in the ring in July, 2009 when he decisioned Khoren Gevor over 12 tougher than expected rounds and tonight the 31 year old local man will be looking for a return to form that has seen him capture the WBA trophy twice along with the WBO strap.

It’s a good bet that Sturm could look very good this evening as the selection of Lorenzo as an opponent continues the tradition of the German facing less than the top line of competition in the middleweight division.

New York based Dominican native Lorenzo, 29-2 (21), has lost to the only two boxers of note that he’s faced thus far, Sebastian Sylvester in an IBF title clash, and 37 year old former IBF light middle beltholder Raul Marquez, although the bouts were close affairs.

Sturm could have problems due to his extended vacation from the sport but once he finds his rhythm, it’s likely that Lorenzo won’t have the experience necessary to cope with the champion’s skillset and seasoning.
