Amateur Boxing: Duva, Mitchell Train Team China

Legendary Hall of Famer Lou Duva and accomplished boxing trainer Al Mitchell will combine to spearhead the Team China training camp in the Poconos as they get set to take on the U.S. in “Empires Collide,” a 13-bout men’s and women’s amateur card on October 1 at Capitale in Manhattan’s Chinatown.

“Team China” arrives at Kennedy Airport tomorrow, and then heads directly to the Poconos to commence training under the deft duo.

Both conditioners have been highly successful working the amateur boxing ranks as well as professionals at the top of the sport.

“The number one thing I look for in a fighter is if they have the ability to listen and do what you want them to do,” said Duva, who last year worked with Beijing Olympic super heavyweight silver medalist Zhang Zhilei. “If he does, he’s like my son – guys like Evander Holyfield and Pernell Whitaker, they were like family.”

The intensive camp will open on September 10, following an open workout in New York on that date. Duva and Mitchell will be joined by other top trainers in preparing the Chinese team, which includes Zhilei and Olympic gold medalist light flyweight Zou Shiming.

“I expect this to be a very competitive card,” said Mitchell. “The Chinese are going to have a good, solid team, and these fights will go a long way towards seeing who is ready to contend for the Olympics.”

“[Zhang] is a hell of a prospect,” added Duva. “I think that if we can put it all together, you are liable to see great Chinese boxers up there with the best.”

Tickets for “Empires Collide” are priced at $120 for Ringside, $70 for Reserved and $25 for standing room/general admission.
