Golden Boy Boxing Resigns Mexican Star Saul Alvarez

ByBoxing Press 22/09/201022/09/2010

Fresh off of his spectacular sixth round knockout victory over former World Champion Carlos “Tata” Baldomir this past Saturday at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has re-signed with Golden Boy Promotions.

“I’m happy with my performance against Baldomir and to re-sign with Golden Boy Promotions,” said Alvarez, who defended his WBC Silver Super Welterweight title in the victory.

“Getting to this point in my career has been a team effort, and with the people I have around me, I’m confident that the next step will be a World Championship.”

“If anyone wasn’t convinced that ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is a future World Champion, they have to be believers now,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.

“At just 20 years old, he knocked out a tough former World Champion who had only been knocked out one time in 64 fights and that was 16 years ago. He is going to be a star in this sport for a long time, and we’re proud to have him on our team.”

“Saul Alvarez is one of those special fighters that can transcend the sport and become a star not only in Mexico and the United States, but around the world,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “He has it all, in and out of the ring, and the next step is to get him ready a shot at a World Championship.”

“Golden Boy Promotions has been the perfect partner for Team Alvarez on the road to the top and I’m confident in their plans for Saul in the coming years,” said Alvarez’ manager, Jose “Chepo” Reynoso.

“I think we’re all aware how special a young man Saul is, and with his talent, hard work and focus, he will one day be a World Champion and eventually, one of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighters.”

A native of Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico, who now makes his home in Juanacatlán, 20-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (34-0-1, 26 KO’s) first came to the attention of fight fans due to his stellar record and trademark red hair.

In 2010, Alvarez made the move from prospect to contender with crushing knockout victories over Brian Camechis, Jose Miguel Cotto, Luciano Leonel Cuello and most recently former World Champion Carlos Baldomir.

Alvarez will now focus on honing his already impressive skills even further in fights leading up to an eventual world title bout.

  • Errol Spence v Tim Tszyu - June 2026 07/04/2026
The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings. I am concerned that Spence has not fought for years now and having no warm up. This may show that he has not much left and cashing in. Tszyu secured a one-sided unanimous decision wi […]

Rene’s not talked about much. Even here in Puerto Rico he’s not as well known as Xander Zayas or even Oscar Collazo.
