One of the biggest punchers in boxing was in action last evening as middleweight David Lemieux lit up the Montreal night with a sparkling KO of Hector Camacho Jr at The Casino.
Just 21 years of age, Lemieux came into the contest having knocked out all but one of 23 previous opponents but had never crossed swords with an adversary as experienced as Camacho.
The bout began with the taller Lemieux connecting with a hard right that Camacho immediately countered with a sharp left hook that seemed to surprised the Canadian.
But that was where Camacho’s run of success ended as Lemieux managed to close distance and start landing rights to the head and body before a point blank short right caused Camacho to grab hold to keep from falling over.
From that point on Camacho tried to use his experience and footwork to evade danger but it wasn’t long before Lemieux pole-axed the American visitor with the same shot, putting an emphatic end to the contest at 3:00 of the first frame.
With the victory, Lemieux retains the WBC International middleweight crown, moving to 24-0 (23) and further up the ladder toward a world title opportunity.
Camacho sees a nine bout win streak come to close and drops to 52-4-1 (28).
Chief support was provided by welterweight Antonin Decarie, 24-1 (7), coming off an Interim WBA title loss to Souleymane M’baye in May, who was given a difficult time during a ten round majority decision victory over seasoned Puerto Rican veteran Irving Garcia, 17-6-3 (8).
