ShoBox Weights And Quotes: Rodriguez vs. McGirt

ByBoxing Press 05/11/2010

The six fighters taking part in an exciting tripleheader on ShoBox: The New Generation, Friday, Nov. 5, live on Showtime (11 p.m. ET/PT, weighed in and gave their final thoughts Thursday at Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D.

The stacked ShoBox lineup will feature three fighters whose fathers had distinguished professional careers.

Exciting power-puncher Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez (16-0, 12 KOs) from Worcester, Mass., by way of the Dominican Republic, will face gritty young veteran James McGirt Jr. (22-2-1, 11 KOs) from Vero Beach , Fla., in a 10-round super middleweight main event.

In the co-feature, Dyah Davis (18-1, 9 KOs) of Boca Raton, Fla., meets Aaron Pryor Jr., (14-2, 11 KOs) of Cincinnati, in an eight-round battle while Houston’s Marcus “Too Much” Johnson (19-0, 14 KOs) is looking to keep his perfect record intact when he takes on Kevin “The Hitman” Engel (18-3, 15 KOs) of St. Louis, in an eight-round affair.

Weights:

Edwin Rodriguez: 166.2 pounds.
James McGirt Jr.: 167.8 pounds.
Dyah Davis: 168.6 pounds.
Aaron Pryor Jr.: 167.25 pounds.
Marcus Johnson: 172 pounds.
Kevin Engel: 171.2 pounds.

Quotes:

Edwin Rodriguez:

“I need to trade punches or I don’t feel like I’m in a fight. My offense is my defense. It’s in my mind to win and look good. I’ll let it all come out. I love to look good.”

James McGirt Jr.:

“Rodriguez leaves himself open, without a doubt. He makes a lot of mistakes and I’ll capitalize. When you’re in the ring, you don’t notice the fans. It could be a million people in the arena; they’re not the one punching you.”

Dyah Davis:

“I’ve been fighting more aggressively. It’s more important for me to win tomorrow because I know people will be watching because of our dads’ history. I want to keep the Davis streak over the Pryors alive but, more importantly. I want to keep my own winning streak alive.”

Aaron Pryor:

“I treat this as a fight regardless of what our dads did. It’s important because it’s my next fight. My length and my jab and my movement are going to be too much for Davis .”

Marcus Johnson:

“I’ve got to look good in this fight. I learned after my last couple fights, it’s not just about winning. You have to look good when you win.

“Guys like Engel, who will face anyone, are dangerous. They’ve got nothing to lose. I’m 3-0 against former kickboxers like Engel and I plan to keep the streak going.”

Kevin Engel:

“You’re going to see me throwing more punches than I did against Rodriguez. My goal is to not take a step back. I take these fights against prominent prospects because I need a challenge to train hard. Plus, it’d be huge for me if I win. I’m not scared. I’ve sparred with Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor. I can hold my own.”

The event is promoted by DiBella Entertainment.

Curt Menefee will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood serving as expert analyst. Gordon Hall is the executive producer of ShoBox with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.
