Golden Boy Boxing: Lara vs. Raines Headline January 14 Fight Card

ByBoxing Press 12/22/2010

With a 5-0 record in 2010 that included three consecutive first round knockouts, Erislandy Lara was one of the year’s breakout stars. On Friday, January 14, at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in the Palm Springs, California area, the unbeaten Cuban standout will return to action on TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” in a ten-round main event bout against Arkansas’ Delray Raines.

Also appearing on the “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” show will be a trio of hot prospects with junior welterweight Frankie Gomez, featherweight Randy Caballero and light heavyweight Trevor McCumby all taking to the ring in Indio.

One of Cuban boxing’s most exciting exports, decorated former amateur champion Erislandy Lara (14-0, 9 KO’s) is beginning his march on the 154-pound elite. Coming off of a stellar 2010 that saw him defeat veterans Grady Brewer and Danny Perez as well as prospects like Tim Connors, Lara earned his first professional title, the WBA Fedelatin belt, in November. He is eager to start compiling some more championship hardware in 2011 but must get past Raines first.

Hard-nosed Delray “The Rainmaker” Raines (18-8-1, 13 KO’s) is no stranger to facing unbeaten up and comers, having been in the ring with the likes of Tarvis Simms, Joe Greene and David Lemieux. A native of Paris, Arkansas, Raines is coming off of a second round TKO of David Molton in September, and plans on extending his winning streak with a win against Lara on January 14.

Considered by many boxing insiders to be the top prospect of 2010, East Los Angeles’ Frankie Gomez (7-0, 6 KO’s) came tearing out of the gate in April and hasn’t slowed down yet. Winner of six bouts in three rounds or less, Gomez went the distance for the first time in October and impressed fans with his poise in outpointing 26-fight veteran Ramon Montano. On January 14, he seeks win number eight against an opponent to be named in a six round co-main event.

Coachella’s hometown fan favorite, 20-year old featherweight Randy Caballero (6-0, 4 KO’s), is a former U.S. Amateur Champion with dynamite in his gloves and his eye on a future world championship.

A professional since March of 2010, Caballero ended his first four bouts in a single round each, but in his last two fights, he showed the ability to box as well as bang as he out-pointed Missael Nunez and Robert Guillen without losing a single round. He will look to keep his perfect record intact against an opponent to be determined in a four round fight.

Former amateur star Trevor McCumby (1-0, 1 KO) made his long-awaited professional debut in October, and it was the worth the wait for his growing fanbase, as he knocked out Sharieff Hayes in the third round. On January 14, the 18-year-old light heavyweight hopes to make it 2-0 in four round bout against an opponent to be determined.

Opponents for Gomez, Caballero and McCumby will be announced shortly.

This night of world-class professional boxing is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and is sponsored by Cerveza Tecate. Doors open at 6:00pm PT on fight night, the first bell rings at 7:00pm PT and the TeleFutura broadcast begins at 11:30pm ET / 8:30pm PT (10:30pm CT).

Tickets, priced at $25, $35 and $45 are on sale now and available for purchase at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, by calling (800) 827-2946 or online at www.fantasyspringsresort.com.

Callum Smith has pulled out of the David Morrell fight which was due to take place in his hometown Liverpool on 18rh April. I was looking forward to this fight. • Errol Spence v Tim Tszyu - June 2026 4/7/2026
The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings. I am concerned that Spence has not fought for years now and having no warm up. This may show that he has not much left and cashing in. Tszyu secured a one-sided unanimous decision wi […]

Negotiations for a WBO and WBA welterweight unification clash between Devin Haney and Rolly Romero have reportedly collapsed. The reason for Haney pulling the plug is that he wasn’t offered a guaranteed purse. PBC instead propose […]
  • Rene Santiago to defend his WBA and WBO junior flyweight belts in Japan 4/2/2026
Rene’s not talked about much. Even here in Puerto Rico he’s not as well known as Xander Zayas or even Oscar Collazo. But he’s got 2 of the 4 belts in the division, and tonight he defends them against Masataka Taniguchi in Japan. Gotta hand it to him. This is his 3rd straight fight in Japan. I admire any fighter who’s willing to go halfway around the world to […]
