Ricky Hatton is tipping Denton Vassell to become Hatton Promotions latest welterweight success story.
The Mancunian risks his Commonwealth crown against fellow unbeaten fighter Bethuel Ushona at Wigan’s Robin Park Sports Centre on Saturday 26th March.
Vassell hopes to follow in the footsteps of Craig Watson who lifted the British crown last month and Matthew Hatton who gained worldwide acclaim for his performance against Saul Alvarez in a WBC light-middleweight title fight last weekend despite being a 10st 7lb fighter.
The Hitman said: “Most promoters would be happy to have one top class welterweight, but I have got three of them. I honestly believe all are good enough to go on and fight at the highest level in the division and even win world titles.”
Ushona, 29, is unbeaten in 23 professional contests and Vassell is well aware of his ability. His trainer Bob Shannon has already faced the Namibian having trained Ali Nuumbembe to face him back in October 2004.
Ushona won the fight on points and Shannon warned: “This is a tough contest and Denton will have to go through some rough periods. People tend to write off a lot of African kids, but this kid was too good for Ali and has kept on improving since then.”
Vassell, unbeaten in 16 contests will be making the first defence of a title he won against Lee Purdy last April.
A second title fight on the bill sees Blackpool’s Matt Askin challenge Neil Dawson for the vacant Central Area cruiserweight title in a another battle of unbeaten men. Other action packed clashes will include Tom Doran, Adam Little, Rhys Roberts. Jez Wilson, Jazza Dickinson and Tom Shaw
Tickets for this big night of title action are available £30, £55 (Ringside) and £75 VIP Ringside, www.brandhatton.com /0844 847 2500/0161 775 7500.
