Wongjongkam Retains WBC Crown In Thailand

WBC Flyweight king Pongsaklek Wongjongkam has successfully defended his title this evening at The Arena in Hatyai, Thailand.

The 33 year old southpaw whirlwind headed off the rivalry posed by reigning OPBF super fly beltholder Takuya Kongawa.

The Tokyo based challenger came in with a respectable won-loss record on paper but despite having the youth advantage at 26 years of age and having operated as heavy as bantamweight, Kongawa was outclassed in the experience department.

Wongjongkam, who logged 17 defenses during his first reign as WBC champion from 2001-2007, has fought more title bouts than Kongawa has had professional contests.

The champion’s command of balance and exceptional footwork proved to be the most difficult thing for the challenger to deal with as these attributes always allowed Wongjongkam to be in position to punch.

Kongawa certainly came to fight and used his edge in strength to try and pressure Wongjongkam. While the challenger had his moments of success, the Thai lefty took advantage of the holes in Kongawa’s defense and peppered in masterful counter combinations.

The Japanese man was undeterred however, he was just unable to truly square off with the cagey Wongjongkam, who ended up winning a unanimous decision, 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112.

Wongjongkam now stands at 81-3-1 (44) and has defended the WBC title for the second time of his second reign as champion while Kongawa sees a 12 bout win streak snapped and falls to 17-2 (10).
