Klitschko Stamps Out Adamek’s Heavyweight Title Ambitions In Poland

ByHermann Helmut 11/09/2011

In front of more than 42,000 fans at Stadion Miejski in Wroclaw, Poland, WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko put down IBF International/NABO strapholder Tomasz Adamek’s title challenge in dominant fashion.

Coming into the bout at his lightest weight since 1998, Klitschko wasted no time in putting the much smaller ex-light heavy and cruiser world champion Adamek under pressure behind a forceful jab.

Adamek was unable to get close to Klitschko in the first round, taking a hard right hand for his trouble and getting hit with the jab.

Looking for a way to get into the bout, Adamek started his own jab in the second and managed to get in a counter combination but Klitschko was still using the jab to maintain control. Near round’s end, Adamek was caught with two big right hands, staying upright only with the assistance of the ropes after the second blow.

Adamek began jabbing his way in during the third and going to the body as well but was still getting caught with Klitschko’s jab, which comes from a low angle and therefore difficult to defend against. Adamek got in a few shots and made Klitschko miss with most of the big right hands the champion threw.

The fourth would prove to be Adamek’s best round as the Pole became aggressive after landing a decent counter right hand. Adamek got inside and landed a couple of good punches, particularly a left hook but none of it seemed to effect Klitschko, who managed to get in a good right.

The fifth saw Adamek try to build upon his success in the fourth and while he scored with a left hook, Klitschko started to find range with the right, landing three bracing shots but Adamek managed to shake them off.

Klitschko ramped it up in the sixth, nailing Adamek with a couple of rights, the second of which sent Adamek reeling into the ropes where he was counted for a knockdown. Adamek went into survival mode after getting caught with a right again but did get in a left, right sequence before eating three hard jabs at round’s end.

The seventh was a less eventful as Klitschko seemed to take the round off. although he was still scoring with the jab. Adamek tried stepping up his offense but aside from a looping left upstairs could only get in some jabs to the head and body.

Adamek tried to break the control of Klitschko’s jab in the eighth, popping in a couple of rights, but the challenger couldn’t improve upon that. Klitchko slipped and fell to the canvas near the end of the round.

Adamek tried to get something going at the start of the ninth, jabbing to the body and trying big shots to the head but has been getting beat up by Klitschko’s jab all night and this round is no different.

The tenth saw it all fall apart for Adamek as Klitschko came out looking to land the right and was successful. After taking two hard right crosses and a right uppercut flush, Adamek was wobbled. Klitschko went after his prey and soon Adamek was reeling around the ring with the contest getting called off by referee Massimo Barroveccho at 2:20.

Klitschko retains the WBC title for the seventh time, improving to 43-2 (40) while Adamek sees a 13 bout win streak go up in smoke, falling to 44-2 (28).
