Ireland won three bouts from four on the opening day of the 39th Chemistry Cup in Halle, Germany today.
London 2012 Olympian Darren O’Neill, Adam Nolan and Joe Ward advanced to Thursday’s quarter-finals.
But Ross Hickey is out of the tournament following a 21-9 reversal to German light-welterweight Artem Harutyunyan at the Maritim Hotel.
O’Neill beat Romanian middleweight Andrei Juratoni 16-13 and Nolan followed that up with a hard-fought 10-9 win over Vasili Belous of Moldova.
Ward, the current European light-heavyweight champion, completed the double over Moldova with a comfortable 14-5 decision over Victor Cotunjanski.
O’Neill, Ward and Nolan will be in action again tomorrow along with the rest of the Irish squad.
The full draw has not yet been made available in Halle.
