The main event of tonight’s HBO Latino’s “Boxeo De Oro” boxing series featured Demetrius “Gladiator” Hopkins, nephew of former undisputed middleweight champion Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins, taking on Paul Delgado. Hopkins, now with a record of 20-0-1 (with 7 KOs), showed rare power as he dropped Delgado a total of three times en route to an eighth round TKO. Demetrius displayed a nice combination of boxing and brawling as he showed some good speed, movement, and solid footwork. The “Gladiator” out maneuvered, out thought, and out brawled the game, but limited Delgado. In the eighth and final round, Hopkins landed at will and finally caught his foe with a solid, crushing hook to the chin that sent Paul crashing to the canvas. Delgado beat the count, but his wobbly legs, and glassy eyes would prompted the referee to call the fight. It was a great performance, and a solid win for the “Gladiator” as he continues to try and make his case as one of the best 140-pounders on the planet. It is the deepest division in boxing, so we will see how far Hopkins can go.
