Holyfield Saved From Himself?

The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) announced today that it has placed former four time heavyweight champion of the world Evander Holyfield on indefinite medical suspension in light of his latest uncharacteristic performance that saw him drop a points decision to unheralded heavyweight Larry Donald

on Saturday in New York. It is a bold move that many would argue could have and perhaps should have been made sooner in order to prevent Holyfield from participating in fights deemed a health hazard due to his obviously diminished capacity in recent times. In typically defiant fashion, Holyfield has stated that he will fight the ban. “What have I done to this game that they don’t want me in it anymore?” Holyfield commented in his defense. NYSAC chairman Ron Scott Stevens went on record to say: “It’s the commission’s responsibility to save a boxer from himself,” he went on, “to my practiced mind, Holyfield shouldn’t be fighting anymore.” Holyfield responded: “There isn’t that much love in the world to go against a person’s will.” This high-profile ban should be honored by all US states and a sharp eye will be turned on anyone who defies it.
