Ireland Doing Well At European Junior Championships

Jason McKay and Kalum McConville edged to within one win of claiming at least a bronze medal apiece at the 2012 European Junior Championships in Bulgaria.

McKay stopped Hungarian light-flyweight Zsolt Karvaly in the second round of today’s last-16 clash to book his ticket into the quarter-finals in Sofia. The Canal BC stand out was five points up going into the second frame.

McConville was involved in a 29-point thriller with Germany’s Paul Wall. However, it was the Dealgan BC ace that held 15 of those points at the final bell of a top class contest.

Martin Stokes produced a typically brave performance in this afternoon’s clash with Dan Lapin in the 46kg class, but it was the Ukrainian that progressed to the last-eight after earning an 11-5 decision.

Meanwhile, Darren Pollock joined McKay and McConville in the quarter-finals following a countback win over Moldovan featherweight Mihail Cvasiuc after a 10-10 tie.

But James Cleary lost to Sorin Claudiu of Romania. The Olympic BC flyweight gave it everything but bowed after a 17-8 reversal this afternoon. Wayne Kelly, Lewis Crocker and Brian Wall will be in action tomorrow.

The quarter-finals will be held on Wednesday.
