Turkish welterweight contender Selcuk Aydin presented himself calm and confident at today’s final press conference for his WBC interim championship bout against Robert Guerrero this Saturday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
Instead of renewing his threat to break Guerrero’s jaw, the reigning WBC Silver world champion said that he was no man of big words.
“Most boxers make a big show and talk a lot before big fights”, stated Aydin. “I will do my show in the ring. People might not know a lot about me. After this Saturday they will. I am here to win and I will win this fight. I am a true Turkish warrior.”
At yesterday’s public workout “The Thunderstorm of the Black Sea” had already expressed his confidence. “People may think I am the underdog in this fight but I’m not”, said Aydin. “I don’t want to hear anybody say it’s an upset when I beat Guerrero. It won’t be an upset. It’s what naturally has to happen. It won’t come as a surprise to me.”
Reportedly, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero’s answer to a question what he knew about Aydin’s home country Turkey was: “Turkey? Reminds me of Thanksgiving…”
When confronted with this provocation today, the proud Turk decided just to ignore the statement – but not without throwing one last verbal hook towards “The Ghost”: “Robert Guerrero said that he is hungry? I will be more than happy to help him and feed him with my fists.”
Guerrero vs. Aydin, a 12-round fight for the WBC Interim Welterweight World Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Arena-Box Promotion and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T.
